Arena - More Maps / Custom Maps?

Hey,

A lot of people have constantly brought up the question, at least, on Arena! Chicago, if any more maps would ever be added. Personally, I'm sick of the same 5 maps over and over again. 2 of the maps barely even get played, and players dread even going to. (Offblast and Watchtower)

Maybe those 2 maps could be replaced with something better? Or perhaps add more maps? We have the vote system, so people would be able to pick these maps (or avoid them) if they don't want to go to them. I'm not sure what new maps could be added, but I know there's plenty of interesting ones out there.

Arena needs a change of pace. If you consider the idea of a few extra new maps, I could bring it up with the server regulars and see which ones are their favorite, etc.

Normally Custom maps are a no go because most people wont stay to download the map, and/or download it externally, so it can kill a server. But i dont see why we cant try it. Anyone else...?

Lotus Arena servers are already hosting all of the arena maps publicised by VALVe, you can check the list here: http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Arena

However, like Krash pointed out, custom maps will add a lot of bandwith traffic, considering most or many maps have the size tenfold of an audio download, and there's hundreds of players going on and off the server a day. This is how I see it,, but I guess you should wait for a proper answer from Mana once he finds the time.

Ah, the map download thing is something I never considered. Usually people need to download a bunch of other stuff their first time on the server anyway, and it doesn't take TOO long. (Unless you're still using dialup.)

The most I've ever waited for a map to download is 40 - 120 seconds.

I just know that Offblast and Watchtower are maps everyone dreads to go to... And the maps we already play are boring as hell.

I could have sworn there was a new Arena Map introduced in one of the updates awhile back, but we never put it in?

oh shit I haven't seen any pigs flying or any kind of hell freezing but I'm 100% sure that mana's trade server is a custom map.

i didn't start going on lotus consistently until after a couple months of playing. mostly because at one point i preferred to just join a random server, talk jive to a bunch of randoms, play some, and then leave/repeat. lotus wasn't any different from any other server i played on.

i think new maps would be good there are a few other good ones and the download for them is not that bad. Also you only have to download it once if the new players can handle the trolling they can handle a download. i hope this idea keeps comming up beacuse Offblast and Watchtower are so very very bad and need to be replaced.

We had a no random damage arena server. It died. And that was when everyone used the server browser and Arena as a whole was far more popular.

There is no universal point for map download, like there was in 90% of the other FPS I have played with custom maps?

Also, with regard to the No Random Bullshit, why don't you try giving in right now. You giving in on the Arena server didn't turn out so bad. I can honestly say that no one on the server is excited about dying to random crockets. Or Pill Critz (especially with the way you fools love Granary, I hate the way that map fills a server.) Also, Watchtower and Offblast need to get yanked from rotation. At least 5 times now I have seen Offblast empty a server because an accidental vote by newbs caused it to be the chosen map.

if you decide not to change the spread or crits thats fine. but Watchtower and Offblast are unacceptable arena maps or maps at all and have to be at the least taken out of the rotation

You aren't helping your situation anymore by thrasing a community player like yourself.

I really doubt half the people that vote know what they are even voting for since they come up at really anoying times half the time I canot even see the vote cause round end, and its over before i can see again. That is prolly why almost all maps get extended until vote is rocked.
