Before I start, if you know a reason why this wouldn't work, say it.
I was thinking, would it be possible for valve to make Left 4 Dead so that you could play both 1 and 2 without quitting out of one and opening the other? Also wondering this about Half Life 2. Anyone with more technical experience than me know stuff about this?

Not how they did it. It could have happened if they just reloaded the AI/zombies/uncommon infected/special infected/characters/weapons every time you switched from L4D to L4D2
but then, since you're reloading the whole game (less hl2.exe) are you really playing the same game?
