lol, it depends on the map honestly. Try playing Medic and see who's doing the best on your team out of a Heavy, Demoman, and Soldier and stick with them most of the time (be sure to heal others too when needed). Following around some top team players as Medic should help you out a lot and get the hand of things. As a Medic, when you reach 100%, you can Ubercharge who you're healing and makes you temp. invincible more or less, so remember to communicate with them, just don't do it randomly!

ctf_mapname = capture the flag - so either play a defensive role guarding the flag or certain areas or go on offensive trying to cap the enemies flag

cp_mapname = control points

pl = payload map - guide the cart along the tracks or defend the other team from progressing it

plr = same thing as payload but both teams have one, its a race

tc_hydro - territory control map...kinda hard to explain, you're on your own lol, its fun though

It gets better, trust me. I remember when it first came out. I was just coming off from a successful DoD;S community that I co-ran but it sadly died out from WoW and a few other games overtaking, and I had played TFC for years so I was looking for something new to get into. At first, it's a little tough, but it gets really run once you get the hang of it. Plus you're already doing good since you have a great community to play with.

Ease into it with what you are use to in FPS games. See what class looks like something familiar to you and go.

It may help if you spectate over some maps to see how classes are played or learn the layout and objectives of a map.

I've only been playing since August 2010, TF2 was my first Steam game (on sale!) and the first FPS I played since Unreal Tournament (that's right, no year after that title.) Between a job, kids, and life I had little time for gaming.

Now that I have a bit of free time, I'm having a heck of a time with it. It does get a lot better when you start to learn the classes. I still have a lot to learn myself compared to these folks, but I hang around on the Lotus servers mostly as most of the regulars are pretty easy going and the admins do a good job of keeping the cheaters out.

For me, I found playing Engineer to start was a good learning experience, and it's still my favorite class depending on the map.

I got it the day it came out a few years ago. Grizzled Veteran! I recommend playing with stock weapons on CP_Dustbowl/CTF_2fort for a while. Learn the strategy first. People who mastered L4D1 then went to L4D2 rolled it.

Once you learn the strategic side of the game, move onto weapons. You'll figure it out.

<rant>

For some people, their objective is to maximize their number of kills. Usually this means they are just hanging out someplace where they can ambush people. Please don't become this kind of player. It is very discouraging to those of us who are trying to accomplish map objectives (attacking or defending in some way), when half of our team is being useless. Usually these people want their name at the top of the winners list at the end of the round. More often they don't show up because their team lost, though.

The heroes are those scouts who captured the intel or points while getting 0 kills, or the engineer who scares away attacks, while getting no kills (though this is very boring). Those people are helping the team while getting no personal score. The spy who spends all his time hiding and backstabbing people, and making no attempt to attack or defend is usually one of the least useful people on the team. The spy who dies taking out a Sentry Gun and getting one point in the progress is much better.

If you get the highest personal score, but your team loses, your just the best of the losers.

If you're going to chill with the engineer class I would suggest getting a headset or boosting up your sound to hear the cloaking and uncloaking of the spy that is about to backstab you.

If that's happening a lot, kindly ask for a Pyro to watch your back while you get everything built.

i remember when i first got tf2. my average fps on my crappy laptop was about ten and my goal was to get a single point in each life, and i often failed at that haha. it takes practice, and just get good at whatever class you like best. i thought the spy was cool, so i played lots and lots of spy, and now i'm a good spy :D
