Sniper Camping

Recommended Posts

If you look at my time played and how it's distributed amongst the different classes you'll very clearly notice that I play sniper tons and might dismiss what I am about to say as someone just bitching and complaining. I am not bitching and complaining to anyone who is not Lotus, I don't particularly care how people who aren't in L play, but I am bitching and complaining if you identify yourself with what I'm about to say and are part of L.

Sniper camping is a strategy amongst many others that helps you get great kill/death ratio or accumulate points, I have a suggestion for you if you care about kill death ratio; play engineer, if you care about the amount of points you have; play sniper. Now if you care about both the only solution you have found, considering your mediocre skills, is to camp snipers. If this sounds like you then please quit Lotus, k thanks!

When I play demo or soldier and I go on the offense, you'll almost always see me jump up the battlements, clear out any opposition there (including snipers) and move in to take out the second floor sentries and even try for the intel if I haven't been killed at that point (what happens most often is I destroy the sentry and then get killed myself, while my team mates go get the intel). If you identify yourself with this, then you are a team player and I want you on my team!

The point in all of this is two fold, 1st my proffesion (sniper) becomes absolutly useless if our soldiers, demos, spies and scouts camp the snipers. 2nd TF2 is about geting the intel not accumulating points, I love beeing at the top of the score sheet myself but what i love about it is how it represents my growing skill, when I first started playing I was always 9-10th in the scoreing, now I'm almost always in the top 3 regardless, but I won't hesitate to switch from sniper to demoman to defend my flag and if I'm alone defending then I will stay there regardless of the fact that offense always earns more points then defense..

Anyways ranting over, my point in all this is don't be a Doomwiki PLEASE!

Normally when I play Soldier, I will fling a few rockets at the battlements when I am exiting my base, and then again before I enter the enemy base. I am really fond of doing this against any Lotus snipers I happen to be playing against, because I know how some of you cry about rocket spammers. =)

I usually am on my way to some other target within the base, but it makes sense to me to fling some rockets at the opposition during my journey. Not sure if this is your definition of Sniper camping or Rocket Spamming, but I admit I do that.

I definitely agree with you, if people are playing this as a team game then the ultimate goal is the intel, and that is always my first priority.

The only player I've seen that pretty much gets most of his kills by jumping into battlements every 2 minutes is Cryptibus. Haven't seen much of it otherwise, and I tend to warn people that start camping the entrance in battlements with stickies, it's just annoying.

I guess you haven't played against Expunged lately. He is almost formulaic in his actions: go soldier, run across bridge, rocket jump the battlements, jump down and go up through the sewers. He does this literally every time, I have spectated him

I would include that if all you did was walk around our battlements and launch rockets and nothing more but shooting while running across the bridge is just plain smart, as a soldier I do the same hoping for an unfortunate person walking into one of my randomly launched crit rockets...

I'd like to rename Doomwiki as the perfect example, he plays sniper and is pretty good at it too, but the moment he sees me log on he switches to scout and sniper camps, I'd like to also point out that he is awsome as a fighting scout, extremely efficient but ultimatly pointless. He cares so much about his kill death ratio (he types "rank" every 20 seconds) that he'll jump off our battlements go back to his base and heal the moment any of our snipers put up a decent fight, so even though his point total suffers because he spends so much time traveling as opposed to killing he doesn't seem to care because the kill death ratio is the ultimate proof to him that he is the best player on our server. I once saw him passing our intelligence (on the bridge and relatively undefended) to go kill snipers...

When I first started playing my kill death ratio was roughly 0.60 now it's at 1.52 I usually average a 2 kill ratio but because of my slow start it's going to be a long time till I raise my 1.52 to reflect my curent kill ratio, I'm proud of my kill ratio, I love my kill ratio but I'm not obsessed with my kill ratio. To me it shows my gradual evolution in skill and I hope that it keeps getting better, but I've died 12 times in a row with out killing a single person (as a spy) trying to get the intel, I'll do what I have to and when I have to to get the intel and that in my opinion is the point of the game.

I play a lot on the server as: Saud

Bane, I agree with every point you've made. It's annoying to play with people who simply want to camp areas and rack up points or play for any other objective. The point of the game is teamwork and getting the intel, and many people on the server could care less about the intel or cooperating as a unified team with one common goal: INTEL.

Instead, everyone has their own alternative goals (kill ratio, get top of scoreboard, etc).

Argh!

*vent*

BTW do u guys have any sniper tips? I've been playing TF ever since QuakeWorld Team Fortress (QWTF) and sniper has always been one of my favorite classes... but now in TF2 I totally suck at it ! I don't know where I went wrong... lol

sniping here is deffinetly very different from the previous quakes, my advise is simple, keep at it and you'll get used to it. But if you where looking for more tangible pointers here's a couple;

1: Always aim for the head, a fully charged snipe can kill a sniper regardless of where you hit him, head or not, but by the time you get fully charged chances are you've always been sniped. A non charged head shot is an automatic kill against snipers.

2: Keep moving, even while zoomed every move you make helps avoid hits, against the better snipers this is a must.

3: Practice your aim first and then your move and shoot tactics, to practice your aim stay behind cover, you can stick your head out to shoot but keep most of your body behind the wall for cover, your head is a small target and half of it is even smaller, so it might give you an extra second to aim your shot even against the better players.

4: Play on the red team, they have shade on their battlements and every advantage helps when you are getting started!

I was actually playing medic and healing him the other day and did not observe this behavior. Spending a few seconds in battlements isn't a bad thing, that's why as a sniper I have a priority to hit EVERY target that comes into view, not just other enemy snipers or people on battlements, I mean everyone, including water and hard to hit bridge targets. Of course if I'm successful I tend to get spammed for the next hour, because I can shut down the battlements/bridge if you give me the opportunity to.

As for some tips:

Move erratically when avoiding enemy snipers. Know that luck is often involved, and you can go on long streaks of not getting any headshots, and get pwnt lots of times, and then an hour later be doing the opposite.

After a while you can get used to aiming without your laser (non-scoped) (which is hard to do unless there's some sort of mod that puts crosshairs in for you, which IMO would be cheating anyway). Pre-aiming helps your reaction time when you're "dueling" other snipers, or running to the other side for a quick shot. This is something I'm still working on, just have to learn with practice.

175 health is about the max that a regular fully-charged shot will hit for, so anything more than that (soldier and heavy, or medic-charged guys) will not get one-shot with a regular hit. So aim for the head, which is what you should be doing anyway.

Don't jump in place. Jump when running.

Most everything else is common sense.

Awesome, thanks for the pointers! Will definitely keep these in mind and practice more.

I do have 2 questions:

1) Do you snipers have Mouse Filter enabled?

2) Is there any way to make it so u "hold" down a button to zoom and release to get out of zoom instead of pressing a button to enable/disable zoom ?

Thx !

yeah I have it but I'm so computer iliterate that I have no idea how to post it here, my brother installed it. So if one of you tells me how to retrieve it I can post it up here.

PS: Even though I have it I don't really use it, I got so used to playing with out it that when I started playing with it I was totally lost..

I am to lazy to read everyones long replies so I'll just say Snipers Camp to get their kills and points and it does help the team by taking on coming classes of the other team. Soldier rocket spam is annoying but it won't be stopped so we can all complain as much as we wan't but it won't be changed. Not by my power or anyones here me thinks.
