Throwing My At Into The Mapmaking Arena

This is the basic concept I have in mind (paint ftw)-- a "cp_3fort" map, a variation on ctf_2fort intended to utilize the map for capture point games.

Some notes:

  • The armories on the middle "fort" are only unlocked if you have the central point already. They are not spawn points, just a small locker room accessible to the team who owns the central point. When capturing the central point the team gains access to the locker on its side.
  • The final cap point I'm thinking of moving to the second floor, where the long stairs down woudl normally be (The stairs down and the normal intel area are both going to be removed), as they don't fit too well into the CP gameplay.
  • The second CPs are on the bridge. I'm thinking of taking cue from the arena_2fort and having stairs leading up to the central fort, however.
  • The middle CP is in the sewer, on either side of it are bulletproof glass.
  • The central fort's door on the top floor only opens whenever someone caps the middle point.
  • A setup time prevents the teams from entering the central fort for thirty seconds. Doors in the sewer entrances, the two front entrances, and the stairways on the top floor open up after setup.

It's still in the concept phase, as I'm playing around with the editor itself in my free time. Feel free to comment.

edit: and yes I know I made a typo in the title. Shutup. I'd fix it but the full editor is not working at the moment.

So I come to a decision... either I build it from scratch, or I try and edit the 2fort thing.

If I build it from scratch, it'll be easier for me, but it won't look as good. But editing the 2fort map file into a 3forts system would be.... a sizeable project.

I say build it from scratch. You can better focus on function and balance that way. I don't know what kind of time restraints you're working with, but I would generally assume that you could always work on the aesthetics later.

Yeah, I'd go with building it from scratch too.

It doesn't have to look good. Just look at the orange maps, they somehow became successful.

I can build the basic map in less than a day TBH (once I get the motivation to get back into it), it's mostly the various scripting, spawn doors, skyboxes, and other crap that bogs me down. Actually building the map-- creating all the shapes and so on-- is easy...
