High latency to Chicago servers

Recommended Posts

Hi.

Within the last week or so, a few of us in Canada have noticed a rather big spike in pings to a few of the Chicago TF2 servers. Most notably is Dustbowl #2 @ 65.60.32.29 as we frequent that one the most. A traceroute shows the problem is outside of our ISP's network. Most other users on there seem unaffected by this. We normally get 50-70ms. Lately it's been 180ms average.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I live in the country as you do and haven't experienced this. The occasional "rubber-banding" happens every now and then but it lasts for a few seconds.

Mana will have the most knowledge about this.

There were a few DDOS happening, some of them were partially mitigated so perhaps that was it.

Does this still happen constantly? Because if so then it's probably unrelated to the attacks.

@CashPrizes - Yes, that's what it used to be before this. Usually stable connection with the odd bit of brief lag here and there.

@Mana - It's constant at any time of day that I've tried. In TF2 currently it's still showing about 175ms average. Other servers (non Lotus) that are in Chicago don't have the same issue. :(

Traceroute still looks essentially the same as earlier. Seems to first spike when it hits static.kpn.net / 62.132.9.222 which for whatever odd reason comes up as in the Netherlands? That could explain the whole issue if accurate but doesn't make sense for the connection to go from Chicago, to NL, and back to Chicago again. Judging by a Google search for telia.net, I suspect they're the issue with the routing. There are tons of complaints online about them. Just no idea how to fix it.

Any chance you could get similar traceroutes from other people (friends?). Then the datacenter might actually look into it to see if it's possible to fix. But as it is now if it's only person complaining they will say it's a problem on your end.

My brother who also plays on the server regularly has this one (same ISP, province: Telus, Alberta)

traceroute to 65.60.32.29 (65.60.32.29), 64 hops max, 72 byte packets
 1  192.168.1.254 (192.168.1.254)  0.678 ms  0.457 ms  0.516 ms
 2  10.145.182.1 (10.145.182.1)  16.156 ms  45.949 ms  16.272 ms
 3  75.154.223.211 (75.154.223.211)  47.990 ms  48.369 ms  80.726 ms
 4  chi-b21-link.telia.net (80.239.192.97)  55.716 ms  54.304 ms  55.022 ms
 5  static.kpn.net (62.132.9.222)  170.391 ms  165.284 ms  167.652 ms
 6  agg1.c13.r05.s101.chi03.singlehop.net (67.212.190.250)  209.787 ms  206.975 ms  206.948 ms
 7  aswg1.c20.r10.s101.chi03.singlehop.net (67.212.190.102)  71.226 ms  70.618 ms  71.130 ms
 8  server4.gamingterritory.com (65.60.32.29)  170.894 ms  170.790 ms  169.942 ms

He found that going through a VPN via New York cut the ping down significantly and ended with the same last 2 hops. Hop 5 above is the one in the Netherlands. I should hopefully have more examples very soon.

Which datacenter provider is being used? Singlehop? I've been emailing the group at my ISP that deals with peering and am trying to find if it's just one provider or multiple that the peering has changed on. :)

Update: Heard from my ISP. They've run checks and the connection from here to the Dustbowl server is fine. They say it looks like a problem on the return path from the singlehop data centre back to them.

They are hoping there is some possibility of getting someone to run a traceroute from the server back to telus01.ring.nlnog.net ? It would be immensely appreciated if that is at all possible. Thank you! :)

I would suggest forwarding your response to Mana via private messaging.

He's currently on vacation, so that's the best way to reach him.
