Readyakira 0 #3 Posted July 15, 2008 What processor speeds are you all running and how much memory. those sound alot like processor speed problems. I get that too, but not that extreme. I know mine is processor related though. I should someday try to turn some of the details down and see if it helps, but I really doubt it.
DarkClaw 0 #4 Posted July 15, 2008 It lags some time after you get in the server because of the custom display page (You know, the first page you see with the server rotations and all), which requires a some time to load.
shpadoinkle 2 #5 Posted July 15, 2008 Same here ---- After the update three or so weeks ago, it takes me at least twice as long to start TF2. Setup: WinXP, 4GB RAM (3.25 usable w/ PAE.... meh), C2D E6600, defragmented.... 37 + 23 + 61 = 121 seconds to get to the Select Team screen.
Mana 3,867 #6 Posted July 15, 2008 Try this: Steam -> Settings -> Beta Participation -> Steam Client Candidate Once you restart and update: Right Click TF2 on the Steam Games list -> Properties -> Local Files (Tab) -> Defragment cache files. Valve FINALLY added defragmention of files INSIDE the GCF. Before only tools like GCFscape would do that and the cache files get fragmented inside every update and that has been made even worse when Steam incorporated downloading from multiple content servers at once few months ago. Defragmenting the harddrive itself won't defragment the files inside the Game Cache itself. That's why you need to upgrade to the latest beta and get that functionality. See if that helps. shpadoinkle 2 #7 Posted July 16, 2008 After doing that it now takes 98 seconds (23 seconds faster). Hooray!
tinman 0 #8 Posted July 17, 2008 i did that , which i probably needed but vista is still taking about 5 minutes from start of game to get on server...

Alucard winrar 0 #10 Posted July 17, 2008 the beta testing ended :-(
Readyakira 0 #11 Posted July 17, 2008 Hopefully they release it then. maybe it will help some of my lag when loading. But I run SATA drives in Raid so I don't know if fragmentation will help me much.
Josh 18 #12 Posted July 18, 2008 all I know is it use to take me about 1-2 min after clicking TF2 on my desktop for the main menu of the game to be running with my new pc it takes about 3 seconds ^^ I don't really get startup lag at all or anything, just lag from being wireless, so I go wired on a 50 ft cable when clan matches happen
Mana 3,867 #13 Posted July 18, 2008 none available 7791[/snapback] It's now part of the Official Steam Client. Same instructions minus the beta part.

PanDaru 0 #15 Posted August 4, 2008 I've had really awkward jumps in how long it takes to actually get in game O.o can take 1-2 Min before team select sometimes, or 5-7 min(which I still think is quite reasonable considering it's a PC game) to get in game. Either way, I'm not ever sitting anxiously waiting for it to open, I usually open TF2 and usually work on some photos or something.(2 monitors)
