Graedus 9 #1 Posted November 3, 2009 This is just some friendly advice for those who might be using AVG... Don't upgrade to AVG 9. Yesterday I upgraded from 8.5 to 9 and when I'm playing TF2 or running else in full screen, AVG will minimize the program at random intervals and inserts a strange task war item that you can't close. You can just resize back to full screen but it will keep minimizing it randomly. Doing some quick research it turns out I'm not the only one experiencing this. Their forums have a few posts about it but their support is ultimately useless; one example of their futility is someone created a new topic, and one of the mods went on a rant about how he shouldn't hijack other peoples topics (It was his topic and the only post). ANYWAY... So if you use AVG, don't upgrade to 9 until they fix it. It probably doesn't happen to everyone but it's an annoying problem to have if you do get it
The Computer Geek 6 #2 Posted November 4, 2009 Thanks for the heads up man. Maybe I'll switch to Avast.
Rigormortis 15 #3 Posted November 4, 2009 AVG fails. Swap to BitDefender 2009. It has a built-in game mode that activates when you open most fullscreen apps. Stops them from being minimized. It's got AV and a FW, downloads and installs all windows updates from a checklist that you can customize or disable, alerts you of system vulnerabilities, etc. Not to mention you can use it to backup or encrypt files, and it comes with a "Tune Up" feature which includes defrag, sys cleanup, file shredder, registry cleaner, registry recovery, and duplicate file finder. Nifty to say the least.
Graedus 9 #4 Posted November 4, 2009 Thanks for the BitDefender recommendation; I'll give it a shot as AVG has turned lamesauce. I had Norton a few years ago and got tired of that. I switched to Zone Alarm but it pretty bloated pretty quickly and ended up going back to Norton and it annoyed me again. I switched to AVG last year after looking AVG, BitDefender and Avast. Never been a fan of registry cleaners though. I feel like they tend to do weird things.
Oww My Nose 19 #5 Posted November 4, 2009 try out GData Defender. i've had good experience with that on windows
CloakedStarship 7 #6 Posted November 4, 2009 I've had Norton Internet Security 2009 for nearly a year now. Norton is generally tarnished because their previous products were all memory hogs. NIS 09 is not and I heartily recommend it.
Graedus 9 #7 Posted November 4, 2009 I'm still on XP and I don't want to pay for Norton
Rigormortis 15 #8 Posted November 5, 2009 God, I used to use Nortan like 6 years ago. What a terrible program it is, or was at least. It did more harm than good. As far as BitDefenders registry cleaner goes, it's just an optional tool you can use. BD was rated the best AV/FW bundle available. High above AVG and zonealarm. kammy 2 #9 Posted November 21, 2009 I've been using microsoft security essentials for quite a while and it doesn't take up any processing at all. Although I haven't caught a virus in forever or yet so we'll see what happens when i catch something but I expect it to be good since microsoft knows their OS in and out. Plus, it's free. Can't beat free. At least norton can't beat it. God I hate norton.
Super Sean 1 #10 Posted November 21, 2009 I use Avira and Spybot. Works for me and they're both free. Then again, I'm still new to the whole PC ground; just got my computer months ago and before that all I had was an Apple G5.

Spyboy S&D IMHO is the best in spy ware detection, also it's has a great set of tools for us advanced users who like their security custom tailored.
