Mana 3,867 #1 Posted April 13, 2010 Zoid Kirsch <[email protected]> to Half-Life show details 5:19 PM (10 minutes ago) On Wednesday April 14th we will be moving the HL2Master servers to a new set of IP addresses. One of the major new features is the new Masters should return dedicated servers ordered by their geographical distance from the player requesting the server list, making for lower latency and better connections. Dedicated server operators will generally have to restart their dedicated servers after this move to ensure they will correctly pick up the new addresses of the these Masters. The server browser in the Steam client and in games such as Team Fortress 2 will automatically move to the new Masters. Server operators that manually set their master servers (we recommend against this practice however) please use "hl2master.steampowered.com" to refer to them instead of the IPs directly. This name returns all Master addresses. We will update once the move is complete. I'm hoping that this will remove the server sorting based on IP familiarity. Currently if your IP starts with 6x. then you see 6x. 7x. servers first with 2xx. being dead last unless ofcourse your IP starts with 2xx. Us server admins have been begging valve for years to make the master send servers based on location instead of IP number similarity. What's good a server in Africa when you live in the US? Hopefully, this is it! So tomorrow, expect some restarts and or slight downtime while I make sure that everything works good on the new masters. Spartan_0214 18 #3 Posted April 13, 2010 Awesome. Wondered why I kept seeing IP addresses so similar to mine at the top of the list despite having something like 1K ping.
Mana 3,867 #4 Posted April 14, 2010 EDIT: Valve has moved their master servers and I have restarted our servers. They are on the list now and getting populated.
a_puma01 7 #5 Posted April 15, 2010 so the change is in effect now? I am in alaska, normally i have 20-30 servers with below 150 latency on my list with filters of West Coast, Below 150, Server is Not password Protected. Ever since this new master server change i can only get 4 servers to show up, even without any filters on what-so-ever.
