Cola Kid 230 #26 Posted March 16, 2015 (edited) I agree, and my vote is in favor of combining them so that votemute also gags them. Reasons: Votemutes are more likely to pass than votekicks. We want our servers to be populated, so if the problem can be solved without removing players by just silencing them, then it should be (currently regular players have no option other than kicking if there isn't an admin available to gag). Votemuted players are most likely to either leave the server, or stay on it and play while muted. Kicked players are most likely to immediately rejoin the same server, so a kick often solves nothing. If someone is spamming one and gets stopped, they immediately start spamming any other form of communication they have access to (chat spam, mic spam, command spam). Subsequent voting takes more time and distraction (to read and respond to votes) to solve the same problem. Subsequent voting tends to draw fewer votes. Spam is spam, regardless of which medium the person is using to do it, and it should forfeit their right to any form of communication since they're already demonstrating that whatever they have to say is spammy and worthless. When the server votes to quiet them, the server has expressed that they don't care what else this person has to say. They don't need a chance to be apologetic. They just need to shut up. Them not shutting up is the problem, and when it's solved, it's solved. A chance to express regret is not necessary to the enjoyment of others. I completely Agree. The only question answer is should this be a universal user ability or donor only? Edited March 16, 2015 by Cola Kid
luop90 4,400 #27 Posted March 17, 2015 I completely Agree. The only question answer is should this be a universal user ability or donor only? All votes are universal. The only bonus that a donor has is that all votes have to go through an 'initiation' phase before the vote is actually called. Donors can skip this phase. Mana 3,867 #28 Posted March 17, 2015 I completely Agree. The only question answer is should this be a universal user ability or donor only? All votes are universal. The only bonus that a donor has is that all votes have to go through an 'initiation' phase before the vote is actually called. Donors can skip this phase. It would be trivial to differentiate the effect based on who called the vote. But it's not what we want. The end result should be the same regardless of your status on the server (or lack thereof).
Jesusfreak 312 #29 Posted March 17, 2015 Just leaving this here. http://www.teamfortress.com/post.php?id=14567 When you mute a player, the mute settings now apply to text chat as well as voice chat. If you want the previous behavior, change convar cl_mute_all_comms to 0. People just have to know you can mute&gag them without all the fuss.
Mana 3,867 #31 Posted March 19, 2015 I have made it so votemute now gags the player as well. And I added a redirect so if someone types in votegag in chat the server starts votemute instead. As always, changes take effect next map/on restart.
