Linux Operating System On Tf2?

Recommended Posts

As title really, had enough of 1. my antivirus keeps slowing my game, and 2. my operating system lagging my game

I have a decent laptop, which sufficiently ran TF2 until I put the full version of mcafee on after my trial ran out, (so ive changed that)

I was going to install Linux, but was told it would not run games (ie tf2), yet google and another "friend" said yes you can if you use "wine"

any users on linux? if so, opinions? as ive read it causes many issues with TF2 and you have to use REALLY low quality

ta :)

Honestly, I would just stick with Windows 7. Disable any real-time protection you have for anti-virus, or just uninstall it and install Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free and works just as well. Loading the flavor of the month for Linux just to play TF2 is more trouble than it's worth.

Sources: I work as a systems engineer for an IT service provider after spending years in the field as a desktop technician.

Avast is less annoying than MSE, but they're both pretty good.

I forgot to add, I don't think Linux is worth the trouble in my first post, was too tired as well to care. XD Perhaps along the road when Steam actually supports it, instead of using applications to get it to work appropriately.

Yes, this can be done. I had it running on Ubuntu 10.10 using wine and a lot of tweaks, but that was the last time I ran it on linux since my school makes us program for Winblows most of the time. Other than saying it's possible, I can't really give any specifics on how to make it work because it was a pain in the ass and I don't remember how I got it working. Now I just dual boot and use Windows for running proprietary games and linux for everything else.

thanks for the advice guys.

Took cafee off and use avg now, which doesnt slow the laptop or game anymore, so i'll put up and shut up.

tbf, I don't really want any hassle with it, if it was easy enough yeah maybe, but my laptop is less than 3 months old so I dont really want to mess with it if i can help it.

Ajju needs to come with a selective filter, which responds to how appropriate the post is, and whether I'm in the mood for light trolling or not.

No offence Ajju. Just I think some of your posts are a bit offensive. I still like you ;)

If it's annoying you so much, then it's time to take a look at your own poison.

Change everything and everything will change, has nothing to do with judgement. I don't like you either.

You can just block him yourself "H". Then you won't see anything he posts.

If I'm annoying him that much, then someone needs to grow the fuck up. Taking advantage of a privilege that Lotus refuses to clamp down on is a bitch ain't it?

H7YCH, go to User CP, Manage Ignore Prefs, down in the section type in Ajju (My current name), make sure the box next to Posts is checked, then hit Save Changes. If you hate me that much you SOB, check ALL boxes. :3

Or alternatively, click this and it'll take you to your profile's ignore page.

Also, why are we talking about moi? This is about Linux and TF2...numbnuts. sleep.png''

Here's a general idea to get topic back on rail, look at how many people play Mac and PC, if Linux were supported, how many users would pop up? Plus, would the games work? (Without using Third Party apps)

True you can block people, but there's no need to be nasty for no reason. You're the one who needs to grow up mate.

If he had a problem against me, he could have sent a PM, like another user did. Problem Solved. Why should I grow up if he's the immature one going Waah like an immature person?

There's nothing wrong with talking things like men, but pointing them out like this, in the most immature way possible, expect to get burned. (Thus my unruly behavior.)

Now enough bout moi, I wanna hear bout Linux, I've been told by others that it's less draining than both PC and Mac when it comes to using game applications, is this true? (I don't trust Google on this subject because if you Google anything related to Windows, you'll find sites that are dedicated to flaming, period.) I've only experienced something other than Win and Mac, something called Ubuntu that I found to be useful when someone forgets their passwords or their Unit got pwned by a Virus because someone forgot to update their antivirus back from 2005.

If only H were a man.

I'm pretty curious myself as to how Tf2 is on Linux.

Well for starters, if (For those running Windows) open up Task Manager, take a peek at how much processing power Valve gobbles up.

When I run Ubuntu, the programs that CAN be run it use nearly half the amount it in Windows, is that because Windows...well, you know, or is it because the way Linux Operates?

linux DOES use a hell of a lot less memory than windows which is why i was going to have it, and it also doesnt need that pesky antivirus.

but when it comes to using it with games MOST games if not all of them come to use with MAC or windows, which is why we need the added wine etc.

but as this turns out to be a ball ache, it may not be worth it, you lose quality of gameplay and also if im correct connection, speed etc.

and please, I have breasticles, not testicles. and all ive asked you to do is back off is it really that hrd for you to understand?

Hmm, they did say that viruses for Apple started to pop up a few years ago, maybe Linux will see some that will get the need to have one. Not that NOT having one is a bad thing, but you know hackers these days...hehe, you have NO clue how much Fraud goes on in a daily basis.

An idea would be for Steam to have it's own version of wine that doesn't turn the games into chophouse, if at all possible? (Or a built in application that comes with a installer package built for it, which...CAN'T be that hard to do, can it? I mean, we CAN run servers off of Linux!)

Linux Operating System - Control Panel Supported Games

Age of Chivalry Battlefield Vietnam (Not BC 2: Vietnam) Counter Strike Source Day of Defeat Enemy Territory Half Life 2 Deathmatch Insurgency Mod Medal Of Honor Allied Assault Natural Selection Red Orchestra MOD Unreal Tournament Zombie Panic

BattleField 1942 Call Of Duty Counter Strike Source 100 TICKRATE Day of Defeat Source Enemy Territory: Quake Wars Half Life Team Fortress Left 4 Dead Medal of Honor Spearhead Nuclear Dawn Soldier of Fortune II Unreal Tournament 2004

Battlefield 2 Call of Duty United Offensive CounterStrike Condition Zero Day of Defeat Source 100 Tickrate F.E.A.R Half Life TV Left 4 Dead 2 Minecraft Quake 3 Synergy Mod HL2 Unreal Tournament 99 Demo

Battlefield 2142 Counter Strike 1.6 Crysis 2 Doom 3 Fortress Forever Homefront Mare Nostrum Modern Warfare 3 UNRANKED Quake 4 Team Fortress 2 Urban Terror

I see all of Lotus' servers on that list...

You're a GIRL? (LOL, no offense intended, when I said MEN, I meant like HUMAN, instead of lashing out like a wild animal. I do have a brain, a heart, and an Epic Black Box ya know.) Hey, I haven't done SHIT to you, YOU'RE the one getting offended by things that I say that I weren't even directed at YOU. (Prove me wrong, I'll give you a key and a cookie if I am.) If you turn your head over to the TF2 Servers, there's MILLIONS that could do a whole lot worse than moi! YOU should quit picking on ME!

Windows has the highest market share on personal/home desktop systems, but linux has been a dominate player in the server industry for quite some time, and is used on most sensitive military communication systems precisely because it has an inherently safer structure. Linux was made from the ground-up with multi-user and networking in mind. Windows originated as a single-user, non-networked OS that got multi-user and networking features tacked on as an afterthought. The reason there aren't many viruses for linux has nothing to do with market share (if it did, linux wouldn't be so prevalent on servers ( http://w3techs.com/t...ting_system/all ), and more to do with the fact that it's nearly impossible to write a virus that can accomplish anything beyond messing with the user's personal files on a linux system. To even become vulnerable to a virus on linux, you'd have to download it, make it executable, grant it root access, and run it. Knowingly. On my particular distro, it would require me to pop open a terminal and write a command to make it executable, write another command and password to give it root access (which I might not even be allowed to do depending on user access settings), and then launch it. Since most of my software for linux comes from the same handful of free software sources and widely reputed repositories, it's unlikely I'd even be at risk of downloading a virus in the first place since I'd have to get it from some other unusual source. For more information about the state of linux vulnerability to viruses, here is some extra reading:

http://www.securityf.../columnists/188

http://linuxmafia.co....php?page=virus

In any case, I never do a thing on my Windows box without my trusty Shadow Defender running, and I don't understand why people who constantly get bogged down by malware during their porny adventures don't just use linux for porn surfing and Winblows for whatever else they're too attached to Microsoft for. Most linux distros can be booted live, without the need for installation, so linux for internet (or at the very least porn) surfing seems like such an easy and obvious answer.
