Chapter 14

A lone wolf was the only one to attend the funeral. It whimpers in sorrow as it trots slowly on the felled, broken bodies of its kin. It nudged its furry snout beneath them, trying to move and wake them from their sleep. Hoping they would somehow stir, show a sign of life but they have been cold almost the whole day, the sun that was scorching above them is about to retire. Sniffing the ground, it followed the scent of someone it knew and found him lying on his back and caked in dried blood. It licked his bloodied face. The wolf recognized him, for he was not just a master but also a friend. Raised since a pup, they hunted together with the pack under the moonlight and shared good memories only to live long enough to end in this terrible moment. Yet the wolf was glad for his friend was still breathing, but it was ragged, coughing and growing weaker.

“Tell… tell the chief… tell them what happened. Go..â€

And with that the wolf knew that now he is alone. With its tail between its legs and still whimpering, the wolf left his friend behind and gone to the woods.

“Captain.†A hoarse voice.

“Yes Lord?â€

“Do you know… we have… new… visitors?†each word is uttered with a difficult, garbled breath.

Noryet sighed. He is actually the one who told him this. The town magistrate, bed ridden, underweight and swollen is some parts. His direct superior had been like this for months. The disease that is ravaging his body was also affecting his ability to remember and to think. Yet still he reports to him like when he was before in his vibrant, healthy self even if Noryet does all of the work in the end from managing the town to protecting their frontier. The magistrate coughed and spat dark mucous on the already stained floor, he immediately went to his side and helped him back to his smeared bed.

“Noryet.â€

“Yes Lord?â€

“My path… don’t follow it.â€

Noryet was just silent.

“I… I want to sleep.†said the magistrate after clearing his throat.

“I will remind the channelers to wake you up just in time.â€

“Noryet…â€

“My Lord?â€

“Do you know… we have new… visitors?â€

“My Lord.†said Noryet as he gently placed him back to bed, “its time for you to rest. I will be here when its time for you to wake up.â€

* * *

Jago groaned. He felt his head throb a rhythm of an escalating headache. Good. He is still alive. But where is he?

Though one eye is watery and blurry, he sees that he is placed on a decent, small bed with soft pads of cloth to ease his back and a blanket to cover his lower body. Lifting it revealed that he was naked but cleaned and bandaged. Who was the one kind enough to do this to him?

“Don’t stand up Jago. Let me help you out.â€

And there she is, standing next to him holding a tray laden with a cup and a kettle, alive, well and still beautiful. She placed the tray on the floor for a moment and gave him a hug, proving that she wasn’t just an illusion. Kisses were exchanged like they haven’t done it for a hundred years.

“Sawa, I am so glad that you are safe.†said Jago holding her teary face.

“I almost thought I lost you... I was so mad at you for leaving me! Don’t ever do that again!†exclaimed Sawa almost sobbing.

“You will never lose me Sawa. Never. You know that I am sorry. I had to.â€

Sawa just wiped her tears and helped Jago to sit on his bed by reclining him to the wall. She next picked the tray and placed it on the bed, poured the contents of the kettle to the cup and gently neared it to Jago’s lips. The liquid was light green, warm and has no odor.

“Drink this herbal. It will help soothe the pain.â€

“Thank you.†Jago said and drank it. He could feel it line along his throat and warm his stomach.

“Do you feel like there is broken bone in you? A dislocation?â€

“I don’t think so.â€

“That’s good. I had to bled some of your bruises and stitch it close. Don’t touch them.â€

“Allright. But where are we Sawa?â€

“These people called Lotus had brought us to their place after they rescued you from our attackers then they housed us in one of their shelters. They brought some medicine and bandages afterward. I think they are nice people after all Jago. It was a right choice joining this clan.â€

Nice? If Sawa just seen what they did to the barbarian prisoner. Jago wanted to ask more questions but they were interrupted by someone’s knocking on the door. Sawa stood and opened it.

“Is your companion awake? Tell him the captain is here for a visit.â€

“Yes. Please come in.†said Sawa with a bow.

Before him now stood their captain. Pale skinned like his peers, lightly built but strong. What surprised Jago are his arms which were quite longer than normal. His long white hair almost covered his face. He was dressed in cotton and silk, woven in a foreign fashion and held close by a sash embroidered with designs, runes and symbols that suggests his rank. Behind him are his huge twin swords, held close by equally huge scabbards, strapped by leather belts.

“Do you need anything more Jago? I am sending food afterwards.â€

“I appreciate that captain.â€

“Oh forgive my manners, my name is Noryet. Your companion, Sawa told me your name. You are very fortunate for she is pretty and kind.†Noryet chuckled but faintly stopped seeing Jago is not amused, “Our patrol found her and told us your location. So we proceeded to rescue you. These dogs are really a nuisance but don’t worry, we made sure they are well rewarded for terrorizing the both of you.â€

“Thank you for saving our lives Noryet. We are forever in debt.â€

“It’s was my pleasure. We have been hunting them for days… Anyway, I have a question for you. What brought a serpent to the Lotus soil? We both know that our people are at war with each other.â€

“The same war brought us here Noryet. We seek refuge from your clan. We are fugitives, fleeing the horrors that our lords are forcing upon us. We have no other way but to risk to knock at your door.â€

Hearing this, the light on Noryet’s face dimmed, his shoulders shook, his eyes went downcast and his breathing dropped incredibly. His strange aura was numbing.

“I am sorry Jago. You are at the wrong place. My town is poor for it felt the war the closest. Our very home was the battle front that we always have to defend. We fought these barbarians almost everyday, everywhere just to keep our families safe.â€

“We are used to poverty and it doesn’t burden us anymore. At least you fight for your love ones, not for other’s selfish causes that forced us to run. Accept us to your clan Noryet, we swear loyalty and allegiance. We shall contribute our skills and services, just to make things a bit easier for your people.â€

Noryet gazed to find truth on Jago. After a few moments of critical judging, he finally let himself to be convinced.

“A new law was passed which offers refugees citizenship within the clan. You two are perfect candidates. Many of your kind that came before you were benefited by this privilege. All it needs is a few months of civil service then the town magistrate will decide.†He said and turned to leave, “Welcome to the Lotus Clan. I hope you prove worthy. I trust your woman will take care of you so heal fast Jago! The sooner you start, the sooner you will be recognized. Have a good evening.â€

“Thank you for this wonderful gift. I will keep that in mind.â€

Noryet left the room and the door was shut close by Sawa. She hurriedly came back, her face fleeting with excitement, hands clasped, her feet jumping in joy.

“We did it Jago! I almost thought Captain Noryet will deny us.â€

Jago just gave her a strange gaze, “Sawa, Do I look like someone to be denied?â€

They laughed. A lotus peasant that came brought them steaming rice, vegetables and a jug of water. It lacked the seasonings but they ate it like they were in a feast. Afterward, they fell beside each other on the cramped bed for the sweetest slumber of their lives.

Then time past quickly.

A few days of being bed ridden irritated Jago but soon he was able to stand up, ignoring Sawa’s protests. He lifted one leg and leaned it high against the wall. His foot reached farther into a full split and did the same with the other. Soon, he was doing push ups, sit ups and some weight lifting with rocks and jars filled with water. When most of his wounds got better, he was allowed to go outside but only within a few paces, not farther from the soldiers guarding their perimeter. There he discovered that they are housed in one of their peasant huts… No, it couldn’t be a hut for it was more made of bricks than wood which is covering the roof. The whole structure was built round with a lavatory and chimney which is an expensive commodity from their clan where five families share one.

Only then he remembered from his studies when he was younger that the high plateau where the Lotus was said had settled is a cold and windy place which probably explains why their houses were built in this manner even if this town was lying low on the flat lands. Yet still they call it a hut.

“Was the hut that the captain had provided you suited your needs?â€

Jago almost leapt after hearing from this voice that called from behind. It was a woman’s voice, strangely melancholic like in prayer.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t meant to surprise you. I was given a task to ensure that you are well housed.â€

Lotus women like the soldiers and peasants had all their hair dyed white. The lightly built, attractive curves were strong and strapping from their fitted, silk, cotton and dyed leather garments intricate by precious stones and symbols. Behind their waist held a short sword strapped in leather belts and a scabbard.

“Yes. Everything was splendid. Please send the captain my regards.†replied Jago, smiling while scratching his nape.

She also smiled back, “Your message will fly Jago.†she assures him.

Her pale hands caressed the feathers of the raven that was perched on her left shoulder and whispered to it. The raven squawked like it understood then flew. Is this what she meant with a ‘flying message’? Astonishing. He never imagined some people have the ability to converse with birds. Though Jago was learned in lip reading during his training as a serpent assassin, he couldn’t decipher the language used. His gut tells him that there is something more from this woman and their peers that they only secretly know. But for the time being, he chose not to be concerned.

“I had some questions.â€

“The captain will meet you again once you are fully recovered Jago. He insisted that all you need to know will come from him.†the lotus woman ended, bowed and left.

“How about just your name?â€

There was no answer.

Fine then lady. Of course Noryet doesn’t trust him that much yet. Since he cannot go farther than the guards’ line of sight, Jago went back to his hut and impatiently waited for his revitalization.

In trying to make the time worthwhile, they spent most of the days discussing on many subjects that made them knew each other better. When they ran out of things to talk about, Jago built some improvements in the bath while Sawa cleaned, rearranged the furniture and requested the peasants that bring them cooked food that they instead bring the raw ingredients and she will do the cooking, which was much to Jago’s relief for he found lotus meals lacking flavor.

Almost every night they make love and in one of them, Jago after finishing his deed, rolled to one side of the bed from Sawa. Both were sweating and breathing a bit heavy. Sawa cuddled knowing what Jago is feeling.

“You are bored. You are too aggressive this night.â€

“The bed is too small for us. I should have requested a bigger bed.â€

“I think it would be impolite to ask.â€

“I don’t’ think so. I will deal with Noryet.â€

“Go on.â€

They fell silent for a long moment.

“We will be serving the Lotus clan to earn their trust.†Jago uttered with a sigh.

“We can do it. Why do you sound worried?â€

“I am not worried. I am just thinking about the service we are going to do. Noryet said we will be a doing civil service, I think he is talking about peasantry. I’ve been a warrior for a long time… I don’t know if I can still work like a peasant.â€

“Well, isn’t it time to bury the sword and pick up a plow?â€

“There is a reason why some people are called warriors and some are peasants…â€

“Jago, since when you learn to do drama?†Sawa suddenly cut him off. Irritated.

“What?! Are you saying…?â€

Sawa’s face turned serious, “Stop thinking. Too much of it is paralysis. You know what you need to do. Don’t be like many people asking questions and second opinions for the pleasure to hear what they already knew. It’s so pathetic.â€

Jago froze. What’s happening? He felt a bit insulted but his logical sense agreed with her. He only then realized that he is getting dangerously less and less assertive and vigilant due to not leaving the hut for a long time and doing nothing much. Suddenly, his blood ran hot.

“Right. You know what, I never seen you mad like that. This way you chastised me turns me on.†He replied with a smirk and crawled on top of her.

Sawa almost screamed but was already drowned by Jago’s kisses and renewed energy.

Soon the same lotus woman visited them again one day, knocking on the door but this time no one responded which aroused her suspicion. She then gestured her hand on the barred entrance, eyes closed in concentration and chanted a whispered spell. It magically creaked open, the door slowly swerving inside like an invisible hand was pulling from behind. Slowly, her other hand reached for her dagger ready. But to her astonishment, she was instead greeted by a warm humid air carrying a fragrant aroma. It pulled her leg to the steps inside the hut.

“Why don’t you take off your robe?†it was Jago’s voice.

“Why not remove it yourself?†then it was Sawa’s.

They giggled and the sound of their kisses mingled with the splashing of the water. The sounds echoed from the lavatory, consuming the lotus woman with curiosity as she nears the slightly closed curtain separating her from them. On the little slit, she bent a bit to be able to peek through it. She had to blink a few times for the warm air escaping from it is drying her already tired eyes.

Meanwhile, Sawa who was completely unaware, witnessed Jago’s gentle face suddenly turned serious, eyeing on the same curtain.

“Are you spying on us or you’re just enjoying the show?†Jago suddenly asked. His skin sensed the sudden change of temperature in the air that betrayed her.

The lotus woman was shocked. Sawa was also in equal surprise. Jago continued.

“Come on in. Reveal yourself. And can you please close the door outside?â€

There was a thud of the door shutting close before he was answered. “No one was answering my knock so I figured you were here.†she uttered, relieving the curtain.

Her eyes almost widened on what she saw. Surrounded by candle lights, they were equally stripped bare, with Sawa clinging to him inside a huge jar used to stock rice that was now chest deep with water. Its surface steaming white, floating low and disappearing as it meets the cold.

“My apologies. As you can see, we are quite busy.†replied Jago with utmost confidence, in contrast with Sawa who suddenly froze, unknowing what to do.

“The smell, is this why Sawa asked for lavender? For this bath?â€

“And mint.†added Jago, “this is a special geisha bath which not just relaxes but also heals and cure diseases. Is what we asked too much?â€

“No.â€

“Then good. Why don’t you join us?â€

The lotus woman doesn’t know how to react.

“Come on. We won’t mind. The water is warm and the scent will relieve your tensions. Sawa, help her in here.â€

Though part of her was hesitant, Sawa still stood and stepped out of the water. The lotus woman stiffened, though she is a bit taller, Sawa’s own figures seemed to be contesting.

“We have spare towels. Let me help you undress.â€

“No. No, I can help myself.†she insisted.

After leaving her clothes in a neat heap, Sawa and her went back to the water together. Jago leaned at the side and reached for some heated stones on the floor and dropped them to the water, hissing in contact making the pool warmer.

“You have a very nice skin.†Sawa complimented her, “The oils in the water will nourish it more and will stimulate your blood to increase your chances to fight diseases while the scent will help you relax.â€

“Thank you but yours has extra care. This bath is a very unique practice Sawa.†she replied, “Before I forget, Jago, I am here to analyze your condition.â€

“Are you a doctor?†asked Jago.

“I’m above that. Even on the worst cases.†she replied with a teasing smile.

“Then you are in the wrong place for I am far from a ‘worst case’ condition. I am actually feeling great. Coincidentally, Sawa is a doctor too. But she specializes on preventing illness. It made me better.â€

“Jago!†exclaimed Sawa in an effort to silence him. But secretly, she was pleased.

“Analyze me later.†Jago continued, “You ladies enjoy yourselves. I want to take a quick nap.†ended Jago, knowing he had brought a topic between them to keep them busy.

After a few moments of women chatter and giggles, Jago raised his head from leaning on the mouth of the jar and dipped his face to the water to warm it. His hands next collected the strands of his drenched hair and place them in a wad at his back.

“I guess you two are already friends now.â€

“We just found out we have a lot in common.†replied the lotus woman.

“Then that would be a problem. Having one Sawa is already a pain, please not another one…†exclaimed Jago.

The two ladies laughed. “You have a weird sense of humor Jago, how about we proceed with the diagnosis?â€

“Don’t be too eager to see my whole glorious self just yet, how about you try Sawa’s massages?†said Jago, as he inched closer to them making her wilt on his presence. He reached his fingers on her nape and pushed his thumb easing it down to her collarbone, “I feel tension on your neck. You might have been in a stressful day.â€

“Sawa, is your Jago really like this? Always getting his way of things?â€

“I’ve been teaching him the massage techniques for quite some time now. He just wants to try them on you.â€

“I mean ‘we’ Sawa. Let’s give our guest the ultimate pleasure from our hands.†added Jago.

Resistance was futile as she was ‘carried’ off by Jago’s strong arms from the jar to a wooden table padded with cloth. She couldn’t do anything but follow his instructions, to lie face down on the table, keep quiet and relax as Sawa prepares the oils. Sawa was worried for she doesn’t know what Jago is really planning yet still she played along.

Soon four hands is kneading and doing circular motions. Her body glistened with the slippery oil.

“Oh goodness! I wish my hands were of yours. Mine’s too rough and calloused.†said the lotus woman breathing heavily but with pleasure.

“What in the realm are you working on? It must be too tiring for I have to use my elbow to release this tension lump from you.†asked Sawa.

“Oh Yes! Please don’t stop!†was her only reply.

Sawa was nervous and keeps on looking at Jago’s eyes that seemed to be glistening. It was a full body massage, no muscle was spared. Every limb and curved was invaded. The lotus woman groaned and whimpered. She could hear her own blood humming in her head, her whole body seemed to glow. Soon she lay there powerless, slouching like a vegetable at the table. Laughing faintly and smiling.

“I never felt so good before.†she said, crossing her arms underneath her face to lean her head on.

“And I never knew this can also be so tiring.†said Jago. He sees Sawa sat on one of the chairs and rested.

“This is wonderful but you have touched all but not the one inside me.†she added.

Her expressions were different. Her voice was faintly descending and lulling, her lips fluttered, her eyes peering on Jago, communicating. Sawa doesn’t seem to hear anything, her mind wandered, her eyes easing to close. Soon her small head shook down and was fast asleep.

“Sawa?†said Jago puzzled.

The lotus woman laughed. She turned her body facing Jago, leaning at her side. Her fingers fixed her damp hair behind her, showing her the curves of her long, soft neck. The tip of her nails traced her glistening skin from her bosom going down to her legs.

“A sorceress and a seducer! What did you do to her?!†uttered Jago.

“She’s just asleep. It’s not a harmful spell. How about you finish what you started? She won’t know anyway. Come to me.â€

Jago sensed that her voice seemed to be commanding his mind and his movements. Laughing, she sat and her arms wrapped around his head when he got closer after his legs involuntarily moved. She proceeded to kiss him, teasingly biting him, finally revealing what she has in mind. But he somehow managed to mentally reject her intrusions in the end with a little effort.

“What? How did you..?â€

“If you want something, you don’t need to place me in some spell woman. All you have to do is to ask.†said Jago.

“Hmmm… You are becoming more interesting. Allright, let’s get it on, I want to feel you inside me Jago.â€

“And by also saying the word ‘please’ †he added.

She giggled, “Okay, please…?â€

“Good. Lie back there and close your eyes.â€

She returned lying on her belly and closed her eyes, waiting for what will Jago do. Soon she felt his hand slithering from her base going down to her person making her gasp. It massaged the outer layers before it went deeper. Pushing in and pulling out, then massaging again. Whenever his ‘wonderful’ fingers leave, she arched back like it was chasing it. Her breathing imp and welling, her hands gripped the sides of the table.

“Oh Jago! Oh! Ooh!â€

Finally, she hissed a steamy cry, a wave of tingling feeling erupted from her womb splashing to her body.

“No wonder Sawa likes you. She taught you well.†she said in a whimper between her breaths.

Jago’s answer is only a smirk. Actually, it was his late master, Vetkin, who had taught him this carnal knowledge and he didn’t expect that he would be able to use it someday.

“Let’s continue further. I bet your manhood has a skill of its own.†she said as she turned again to face him and moved one leg to bare the way into her.

“No. Only my hands are what I will offer to you. And this is the last of my services for today.â€

“Jago!â€

“Let’s now proceed with the diagnosis you are telling me.â€

“So you are that faithful to Sawa? That’s admirable.†she stood and closed to him, tracing her fingers on his chest, “But what’s wrong if we are just enjoying the pleasures we can give to each other?†she whispered holding his face, closing her lips to his.

“The only way you can pleasure me back is by finishing this business between us.†he replied while turning his face, rejecting her advances.

“As you wish. You are obviously well Jago. I will schedule you to meet the captain some day.†she finally gave in, sensing Jago’s indomitable sternness.

Suddenly Jago’s hands lounged and gripped her wrists, “It shall be tomorrow. No more delays!†said Jago with a hint of authority, “so you shall get more of these sooner.â€

Surprised on his sudden reactions, a hint of fear enveloped her. But she eventually got back to her senses, “You have a gift in politics Jago. Tomorrow then it shall be. Will you let me go now?â€

“After you tell me how can I bring Sawa back from her slumber.â€

“Just as how you wake a sleeping woman. I need to go now.†and Jago so released her, “Thank you.â€

She dressed quickly and soon was out of the hut, leaving a trail of sweet scent on the wind, some lotus citizens and soldiers had their heads turning to her direction as she passes by, wondering.

But in the darkest corners, unseen by the eyes of sentries, the lone wolf could smell the same scent but his wet nose could sense something else stronger. His stink will never be forgotten, especially by this animal. Knowing the location of the hut of his friend’s murderer, he crawls away from the place after mastering its place above the stars.
