Motd Design Contest

Recommended Posts

We need a new MOTD! So I am making this contest in hopes of finding a good new MOTD for us. The prize will be a free reserved slot on all Lotus servers for 6 months and a special in game perk (more on this later).

Who can enter:

Anyone! Me included.

What needs to be done:

An image with a source file (Photoshop PSD, Fireworks PNG) that follows the guidelines found below. You do not need to have any HTML/CSS knowledge, I can do that part if necessary.

Guidelines:

  • Easy to read.
  • Interchangeable (If it uses character renders from TF2 those should be easily replaceable with localized renders from other games).
  • Has enough space to fit:
    Basic rules/Lotus news
    Server List
    Lotus Logo
    Donation Link/Button

How the winner will be picked:

All entries will be voted upon by the members/recruits first and then the rest of the forum.

I am moving this here for now because Gabe is posting a new thread every day and pulling this down.

Well, this is what I came up with. Fairly simple. I can give the psd doc, so you can more easily change the characters. A TF2 font is intended for the following text.

The red box will hold the clan name and logo (I'm assuming you have it saved somewhere and can throw it in)

The blue box will hold the server name and all the maps in the rotation.

The big empty space will have all the server rules, and towards the bottom of that space, the whole server list.

Do we have a deadline?

A month or two from now. I still need to do 2 skins for this forum. So there's time before everything goes live :).

My entry. I recently re-installed Photoshop CS4. I have been trying to uh, acquire, a good copy. The PSD for it can be found here.

I am assuming that you can just do some CSS and slap a button right there for the donate link.

Is the new MOTD that's up a placeholder or did you end this?

Placeholder. The contest is still on until the new forum skin/site go live.

Sometime this month...

*whistles a small tune* So... What does the winner get?

Here's my entry:

I made 2 versions with the same theme, one for TF2 and one for DOD. The Sandvich poster inspired this.

Live pages here: TF2, DOD

A few bits could probably use a few tweaks, but it all works. I just noticed that I forgot to fix the DOD benefits, but that's not a big deal.

I see a few problems with this one. First of all, I noticed too much empty space. It's one thing to have everything cluttered, but it's another to have things unnecessarily far away from each other. Another thing is the overlays with text on them really shouldn't continue the multi-color pattern of the design behind, it just makes it hard to read.

You were correct. First, the empty space was there because I made the page adjustable. On smaller screens everything was more compact, but on larger screens it spread out a bit. The size could be adjusted by changing the minimum width of the contents. Second, I guess I wasn't clear enough, I made two themes, one for TF2 and one for DOD the picture above is a composite of both showing that the design is the same but the color schemes are different. So that corner doesn't actually have multicolored text.

Here's my entry modified to fit an 800px window:

Last night when I was playing I realized that my design might be too wide for the MOTD window. Glorificus, do you know what the width of that window is?

Depends on the resolution.

Depends on the resolution.

I think 800x600 is normal resolution for a MOTD

Here is my entry. I don't know if you guys are still open but I am going to try anyways!

I made it to fit Team fortress two style. Text and placements of the elements can be moved around at will.

I still have PSD file to add links and other text and whatnot. If more are needed to fit other game art styles then hit me up and I will see what I can do.
