Racisim On The Servers - Where Do We Stand?

Recommended Posts

ok i would like a clear cut defind line here. i know lotus employs a freedom of speech act across all servers, but where do we draw the line? especially when it comes to clear cut racial abuse??

im a regular on the x33 uk 24/7 dustbowl and as of late the racism on the server is getting appauling, it mainly 2 culprets who are directing towards one guy who is, to put it in his words, "black irish"

unfortunatly i didnt get a demo of said incident but lotus chat logs from a trisheh - no youre a towel and catfish are horrible to say the least.

h7ych witnessed a large portion of it this afternoon and gave them a polite warning to stop with the racial abuse - but it still continued well after she left - she tried votekicking the player but the vote ultimately failed, but as a result she herself then came the subject of verbal abuse even after she left the server

so please - where do we REALLY stand on this?

It's up to the individuals on the servers to police it. If they don't care enough to kick then nothing will be done.

Freedom of speech and freedom to be an asshole are two separate things.

If you walked down the street and called someone a nigger or racially abused them then I'm sure you would get punched, beaten up or seriously given evil looks at the least.

Unfortunately because you're in an online environment, many people seem to think they become immune to this.

I'm sure a fair few of you are aware of this, but this women was arrested. Not sure how extreme the racism on the server is, but yeah not pleasant at all either way.

Personally, people who troll or are excessive abusive should be banned, at least temporarily. If I see these people on dutchkev I'll be sure to make a demo and go through their chat logs too.

Problem is if there are a few working collaboratively then votes are quite likely to fail, or if some people there take that view. Others might just enjoy the commotion... Even a kick is for 30 minutes though, and then a player will return and continue.

As far as causing trouble or trolling, catfish does do it to some extent and in future I will record what's said. Dutch, each ban request is dealt with on an individual basis so all you can do is request it and hope for the best :)

No they aren't. Any definition of assholishness is completely arbitrary and subjective. There is no unbiased way to enforce a "don't be a dick" policy. The thing about TF2 is you can easily get rid of things you find offensive without being suppressive, because TF2 has mute/ignore features. When I kept seeing goatse style sprays all over Lotus servers, I disabled sprays. Problem solved. Easy, no?

Being offended by racist comments, (that, most of the time, usually aren't serious) is subjective.

Welcome to the internet, by the way.

Pretty much this. If the persons behavior starts to disrupt the server, i would be happy to place the ban.

Although, nothing will get done without a proper ban request, so I'm locking this and recommend that you follow it up.
