Anyone play D&D?

Recommended Posts

Meet your tank.

Looking for any feedback. And if someone who knows what they are doing could check my stats I'd appreciate it. Things I couldn't figure out I just left blank :x.Also the sheet will look a little weird as I'm using the deluxe version for fighters.

Nano, it has been a while since I've played but if memory serves, Scale Mail should reduce your speed from 30ft to 20ft.

Edit: Also, assuming that you're all taking max Hit Points at first level, your HP should be 15.  Fighter: 10  Con Bonus: +2  Toughness:  +3.

Nano, those are great starting scores - well balanced. With a strength score of 14 and a height of 6'2" I would lower your weight a bit to 240 or so unless you want a bit of a belly. Maybe move some points out of Intimidate or Spot and include Appraise and Listen? Don't have to, but it might be helpful. Read those skill descriptions and think about it. smile.png

Thanks.  I'm also considering changing up my feats to focus more on tripping/grappling.  Will repost a new version with the fixes and perhaps suggestions above.

*stumbles off work on that*

*at work, using char generator app*

"Ohai boss! Erm.... this? This is a ... program to... create random customer data for our test database..."

(we now have an Ironbeard Hammerfist in our database, and i got a note from my boss to use less silly names)

Ugh.  The more I read about the fighter the more useless he seems as a tank character.  Can anyone confirm?

Also, DB, are you allowing the Leadership/cohort feat?  Are we restricted to just the phb or are the special classes allowed?

In 3.5, "tanking" is a useless word. There are very few mechanics that will make enemies "stick" to you. In this edition, I find it better to be the biggest threat to the enemy. That usually ensures that they'll target you. Unfortunately, Fighter will drop off considerably on the damage/threat scale as you progress. You'll have to find a style of combat that you like and stick with it. That's what all of those extra feats are for!

That's really good to know.  If I can't "tank" then perhaps I should rethink altogether what I'd like to play...  decisions decisions...  I rarely feel so wishy-washy xD.

Oh dear space lord, is there any deadline to have our characters created?

There is no current deadline for characters. It's more important to get them right so you feel strongly about the character you'll be playing.

If you're looking to play a "tank" like character, your best options are fighter or barbarian. Even though barbarians get that powerful rage bonus and the highest hit point dice, I think that fighter is the better option. Arakvar is right though, with the fighter you need to have a clear concept for your character and their fighting style because there are so many options. Feats like Weapon Focus, Power Attack, Improved Critical, Cleave, and so on will be what you're looking for because you can maximize your damage output. Cleave is especially nasty because you don't stop with the one kill, but your weapon strikes the next bad guy!

You can take any feat that you meet the requirements for. Leadership (I think) is 6th lvl and above. There are many prestige classes available once you meet their requirements, but it's usually a good idea to start with the basics and build on that. Knowing where you want to take the characters development is important because it becomes a motivator in game. If you're trying to become the best swordsman, you'll need to find the best teachers and the best sword - and then you'll have to prove you're the best! Adventures galore.

And are we restricted to the Core classes/PSB?

Like what was said about playing a werewolf, you'll be targeted. People (NPC's) will instantly dislike you. You'll also have to deal with a level adjustment as per Savage Species. Playing a monster class would be cool, but it needs to be really well thought out so it doesn't end badly. Drizzt is a good example of this.

I once played an air elemental, job assigned to me by DM to annoy our Wizard a bit after he got overconfident and botched a roll badly.

It was meant to be for one evening. I ended up playing that for the rest of the campaign. ;)

Looks good to me. Are you going to go in the direction of Battle Rager? Do we have a Thibbledorf Pwent on our hands? Look up this character if you don't know what I'm talking about.

So far everyone is coming at me with well thought out and balanced characters which is making my day quite frankly. People usually try to push some kind of ridiculously high ability scored monster on me. Well done everyone!

Well, here's my first draft of my story. No I haven't edited it. Yes I know it's silly.

I've borrowed mt bf's D&D rules and info book v3.5 as well, so I'll be swotting up on my class =]

1st draft

Name: Eala Sionnach (pronounced El-lah Son-nak. No, I don’t care what you think XD)

Height: 1.7m

Weight: 45kg.

Hair: Red

Eyes: Green

Build: small/slim

Race: Wood elf

Alignment: Chaotic neutral

Personality type: INTJ / 5-7-9E

As the wood elves were a nomadic race with very little technology, other species shunned them, and called them primitive. From a young age, (or when their ears begin to point), lessons were always given on how to survive and tracking, with speech, walking and writing coming afterwards. Elflings were taught how to use a bow for hunting, and how to use a dagger for skinning. And so it was with Eala. However, she was never as good as the other elf hunters. Such show offs they were, using one arrow to hit a deer’s jugular from several long yards.

It didn’t help that Eala was the youngest elfling by far. She grew up with her loving parents, but they were always trying to make her more like the other elves. “Wear these clothes, you’ll look nice!†What for? What’s wrong with what I’m wearing now? I like what I’m wearing now. “Well… you’ll fit in dear… maybe even find yourself a partner!†Yes of course. Because life was that easy. If observing others had taught her anything, it was learning where others were wrong.

She made up her lack of skill by being the quietest, sneakiest dagger-master in the community. She was able to sneak so close to animals and people that she could nearly touch them. By the age of 10, she had no further use for bows or crossbows. By 17, she could make traps of any kind, designed to trap anything. Some traps were lethal. Others were not.

Not that Eala didn’t like hunting. In fact she loved it. She lived for the thrill of the chase, the rush of adrenaline, the blood pumping in her long, keen ears. But deer, wolves, bears, foxes and other animals eventually provided no challenge for her. So in the end, she went looking for bigger game. The best game, the smartest game. People. So while she was out hunting one day, she turned away from the beaten road and decided to walk through the unmarked landscape, eventually coming to a city that she didn’t know the name of. Hiding inside a trading cart, she smuggled herself inside. Then waiting until twilight, she found the seediest tavern in the city (after much exploring). Walking up to the bartender, and doing her best to ignore the stares, she asked the bartender where she could find work.

“’Ey now, if it’s work yer be wantin’, yer betta off lookin’ in the trade districtâ€.

He eyed Eala up and down, drinking in her rough clothes and carved features. Then Leaning in close, he said in a loud whisper: “Though fer a young elf like you… I bet I could find work for yer right ‘ere…†the bartender said, a sneer twisting his hideous face. Evil chuckles from the crowd at large sent panic into Eala’s bones. She forced herself to remain still, and tightly grasped hold of the only things she had...

“Well missy? Wot’s yer answer? Yer’d ‘ave plenty of good business up ‘ere! With plenty of demand too, once we got yer a nice frock… Though, thinkin’ on, yer wouldn’t need any clothes at all!†The tavern erupted with noise, as the crowd cheered and yelled, its patrons closing in around her.

Then a patron screamed and stumbled backwards, knocking over chairs as he struggled to put as much space between him and Eala as possible. As she slowly turned to the side, the only sound that could be heard was the bartender’s gurgling, and the rhythmic ‘drip, drip’ of blood on the stained counter. The grisly sight of the bartender’s head greeted them, stabbed with a knife from under the chin. The crimson tip of the weapon poking out of the hair perfectly matched the colour of Eala’s lips, as they curled into satisfied smile.

Silence reigned, and even though Eala was only whispering her words that were drenched in hatred, every soul in the tavern heard her.

“THISâ€, she said, wiggling the bartender’s head for extra effect, “is what will happen to anyone who looks at me. If anyone speaks to me, I’ll cut their throat, and leave them to bleed in the gutter. And if anyone tries to touch me, I’ll break every bone in their body, tie them to the back of a wagon, and set it off rolling, dragging your helpless body along and leaving you to be eaten by strays. Am I understood?â€

There was no answer.

“Though on the bright side,†Eala continued, yanking the knife out of the corpses head and carefully cleaning it on the dead man’s clothes, “your body won’t be hard to find. Can’t say what condition it’ll be in though†she added, an evil grin spreading across her face.

Needless to say, she managed to leave the tavern without incident. Minutes later, she heard running footsteps behind her. Turning around she saw a young human male in poor garb, gasping for breath as he reached her.

“Oi, lady, I got a message for youâ€, shoving a folded piece of paper into her hand, “Go on, read it!â€

Unfolding it, she read, ‘The Holy Church confessionary. 3am. A job. Be there’.

EDIT: Someone will have to help me with the stats bit =S

Yeah, my goal is to be a brute and focus on cleave to maximize the number of enemies I can attack at once - hopefully keeping some heat off my allies by doing so.  I'm purposely trying to keep my dexterity high to maximize the number of up-close interactions possible.  I want to be light on my feet (heh just had an image in my head of a prancing dwarf in a tutu xD).  It's nice that the combo of barbarian (+10ft) and dwarf (+10 ft) allows me to wear medium armor but still go 30 ft.  My CON should boost my HP to make up the difference that I lose by not having a higher armor class.

Interesting group so far: Human Ranger, Wood Elf Assassin, Dwarf Cleric, Dwarf Barbarian...

So, I used this (http://www.pathguy.com/cg35.htm )to make a character and it works pretty great. The only problem I had was what to do with the finished character sheet it generates. I copied and pasted into a rich text doc, but there has got to be a better way.
