Closecaptions

Question

I saw harbleu using these Closecaptions on i52 and wondered what it was since then. Today I found it randomly and installed it.

Beeing me, I played around with it and made it fit into my hud. Now it looks like this:

Problem is, I changed all the colors except the medic ones to white in the file so the text should be white, for some reason it's using the default colors though.

Did anyone try this before and can help me? Would be awesome smile.png

I actually did this not that long ago. My version only has select ones shown, with the rest hidden to reduce spam.

Though I'm not having the problem you are with the colors being messed up. Mine are what they are specified to be, not the default ones.

Found a tutorial on tf.tv forums.

Works now

In case anyone wants to try and doesn't want to go on teamfortress.tv thread, here is my short guide:
1. Download the Closecaptions from here.
2. Put them in your huds resource folder
3. Open closecaptions_english and edit it to your liking:
- Delete captions you don't need/want
- Change color of captions to your liking ()
- Edit text in case you don't like them
- Select font
4. Open your clientsheme.res and search for "caption". Here you can define a few things:
- Size of the font ("tall" "x")
- Italic "italic" "1" to enable, "0" to disable
- Dropshadow "dropshadow" "1/0"
<i> font in the closecaptions_english.txt is CloseCaption_italic, <b> is CloseCaption_bold (each change requires a tf2 restart)
5. Open hudlayout.res in your hudname/scripts and search for "caption" again. You should find an element called Closecaptions or something.
Here you can edit quite a few things, most are quite self explanatory. (Too see changes, type hud_reloadscheme in console)

Now you should have defined colors, fonts, positions and all that stuff.
Now it gets a little complicated. Basicly, the closecaptions_english.dat is a translation of the closecaptions_english.txt so you have to create a new one every time you change the .txt file. To create a new .dat, do the following:

7. Copy the closecaptions_english.txt from the tf/custome/hud/resource folder to your tf/resource folder, replace the existing closecaptions_english.txt and delete the closecaptions_english.dat in the tf/resource.
8. Open the folder common/team fortress 2/bin and find the captioncompillar.exe
9. Drag and drop the closecaptions_english.txt from team fortress 2/tf/resource on the captioncompillar.exe in team fotress 2/bin.
It should create a new closecaptions_english.dat in the tf/resource folder.
10. Now copy the closecaptions_english.txt and the new closecaptions_english.dat back in your custome/hud/resource folder

Maybe if someone wants to try this one day this will help.
I will go over it tomorrow again, typed this from phone out of mind from few hours ago.

...don't delete the captions you don't want. That'll cause you to pull a ton of "no caption found" errors. Just set the alert to nothing. So in the second column erase everything but the quotes. ("")
