Total Annihilation was released before Starcraft, and was generally a better game-- especially for the modding community, which made the game so much more varied and fun to play for a long time after released.  Thousands of new units, hundreds of mods, a dozen or so total conversions making it into a new game entirelly... one game turns into many with this type of modding support, which was hands-down the best modding support of any game in the business, with the possibility of the engine used by Valve in Half-Life.

This doesn't include tons and tons of other games that were released at the same time, shortly before or after, or in the many years since, that have exceeded Starcraft in quality, just the one example I had in mind.

I don't hate starcraft. It's a good game. By today's standards it's crap, but back then, it was probably the second best RTS game of it time (after, of course, Total Annihilation).

... and South Korea's "competative gaming" crowd can shove it up their collective derrieres E-sports are more about name recognition and pushing money into the scene rather than actual game quality. That's why you see CnC3 in the official comeptative gaming circuits, despite the fact that the game is entirelly unsuited for such, and why you won't find games that ARE suited for competative gaming-- such as Company of Heroes-- actually be used.

CoH is not suited for E-sport at all, you are forced to take the opposite faction to the other player, you can't make mirror matches(like Allies vs Allies). And Starcraft IS an incredibly deep RTS. New tactics and strategies are being invented every year on the pro circuit.

If those same people who played SC too much switched to CoH without bias, they would not be disappointed in strategic and tactical depth, although wether or not it fit their 3-clicks-per-second playstyle is another question entirelly.
