Oww My Nose 19 #2 Posted December 2, 2008 would you consider overclocking your CPU? http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/cpu-gr...ing,2082-6.html they're talking about overclocking an E5200 which cost them almost $100 less than that CPU, they got it to 3.66ghz, without raising the core voltage (that's good), although, when overclocking, it's a good idea to use a different cooler than stock, where they used a heatsink/fan combo called Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro. that's only if you're comfortable going into the bios and overclocking yourself, and that's also assuming the CPU they got wasn't a freak that just got amazing results, or that you won't get a bad cpu (which is a very real possibility)
Nket 16 #3 Posted December 2, 2008 Mana wants me to overclock it.. so probably i will
Oww My Nose 19 #4 Posted December 2, 2008 go with the E5200 then. you save a shitload, and you'll probably end up around the same place, since the E5200 has a 12.5 multiplier with an 800FSB (200mhz), and the E850 has a 9.5 multiplier with a 1333FSB (333mhz) and both processors are on a 45nm die
Mana 3,867 #5 Posted December 2, 2008 go with the E5200 then. you save a shitload, and you'll probably end up around the same place, since the E5200 has a 12.5 multiplier with an 800FSB (200mhz), and the E850 has a 9.5 multiplier with a 1333FSB (333mhz) and both processors are on a 45nm die The E5200 is crap. It's called Pentium Dual Core for a reason. Less cache and slower. Seeing how Source uses the CPU for everything the higher cache would be helpful in gaining more fps as would the speed of course seeing how Source barely uses the other core currently. It Should be possible to get the E8500 to 4.0 GHZ + with air. Friend has a E8400 running at 4.2 on air. So this should go even higher, even if slightly. Should be able to 3.6-3.7 on stock cooling with the default voltage.
silvio 0 #6 Posted December 2, 2008 overclocking has been proven to not be worth the small improvement vs the risk of your cooling failing and burning up your hardware.Dont know why people push their hardware so hard with overclocking for such a small return, just buy a better card/cpu. Rydawg 14 #7 Posted December 2, 2008 Good choice on GPU, RAM and CPU but seriously, a nvidia board /barf Get a p5q pro + e8400 ( newegg usually has bundles for 250 ( with a 15-20 buck MIR making it 230-235) Get a 4870 ( about same price as 260 with a little more horse power) ATI4850>NV260>ATI4870>NV280>ATI4870x2. Some of the duo cores overclock really well. My E6600 2.4 ghz is overclocked to 3.2ghz with no problem (33% increase). Its been stable for 2 years. Also, a lot of different cpus are really the same grade but slapped on with a different label. Its also a hobby for some people.

No it's not. He didn't get the 260. He got the "260+" or "260 core 216". Which costs less and is more powerful. Just Google some benches and you'll see. http://www.bjorn3d.com/read.php?cID=1414&pageID=5827 http://techgage.com/article/ati_hd_4870_1g...x_260216_896mb/ And far as I know only the Skulltrail (Dual Socket 771) can do Sli on Intel platforms. (Not counting the new X58 Nehalem Mobo socket 1366) yea some do overclock well but for the most part its still a risk.Ive seen too many people get out of control with it and burned their shit up. If you don't over voltage the CPU then it won't explode (Stay in the green zone). I myself have cranked the Voltage to the RED zone and yet have sub 40C with AIR when the fans are cranked up. I also had to put extra juice due to the fact that all my the ram slots are filled and being used: Oh and Server 2008 FTW. DX10 and all that fun stuff whit out the extra memory footprint of Vista (No I don't have enough ram).

Good stuff.
