Izaak 3 #1 Posted May 23, 2009 So, even though Battle Realms has a smaller unit count than every other RTS out there, it still ends up being huge armies clashing one another. Also, maybe it's just because I never play online, but I'm not bothered by any harassment. My goal is to devise a way wherein a smaller number of units can still make a deadly force against a larger army. So here's my idea: Fabled Units. Fabled units are basically normal soldiers with above average stats and abilities. Let's say, the Dragon Archer. Training it in the Academy will result in a Fabled Archer, a character that acts and functions like the basic Archer, but who's damage greatly rises on elevated terrain. Battle Realms maps are pure eye candy, which I'm sure that all of you would agree. However, most of that eye candy is based on symmetry, hence why creative harassment may not be as effective (at least for me). A more asymmetric map will cause for more harassments. Or maybe just add more obstacles/impassable terrain for symmetric maps. Fabled Archers would do more damage standing on one of these elevated terrain, allowing them to pick off more units with less numbers. Obviously, to balance everything out, there should be a limit to the number of Fabled Units. Let's say 5. Anything above Tier 2 cannot train to become Fabled Units. Remember, this is just a concept, an idea. I am fully aware that I am incapable of actually implementing this. This idea especially coincides with how I play the Lotus. We Lotus rely heavily on Battle Gears, particularly those obtained from the 3 brothers. However, considering the 3 brothers/Crypt is very far along the Lotus' tech tree (whereas other clans need only 1 building to unlock the BG building, Lotus needs all 3. plus they need the Crypt to unlock their healers), the Lotus is also slow. They're not truly built for harassment, although Leaf Disciple rushes are very successful. This makes us (or from how I play) as late-game players. Fabled Units would give the Lotus some leeway in the mid-game play, or reinforce the late-game army. Fabled Infested would be far more damaging; Fabled Diseased would be far more tougher, and Fabled Unclean would have splash damage to their projectiles. Fabled Units may also have different BGs than their normal counter parts, like Fabled Acolytes have 'ice touch', freezing enemies and allowing them to escape. Fabled units can be retrained back as the next tier units, although they lose their 'Fabled' status.
hyperknuckles77 2 #2 Posted May 31, 2009 Hmm sounds good. Though I think BR is already balanced as it is. The upgrades/techniques are enough to make units stronger. Any more than that would seem a bit.. over. Just my piece of cent, though.
TriZed 1 #3 Posted May 31, 2009 I think it would not be fair if you still can make a Fabled Unit out of Lotus..... With there SC & DC battle gears, I dont think there are other clans except Serpent that can defeat them. Well Im talking here of the online game...and also the way medium players (like me I guess) and the pros play them. In late games, I really dont agree that the clans are balanced as a whole. Why? Let me elaborate. In late games, except for the Lotus, who can outdo the might of the Dragon clan with there dragon sphire ready. Maybe the Wolf can almost do it, but I say just almost. The Serpents? they're like toasted bread once sphire is fired. Scatter the serpents? The dragon warriors can take them 1 by 1.
