Gravetalk On Lotus?

Recommended Posts

Competitive balance. e.g. Wouldn't want someone calling out a spy's location immediately after getting back stabbed. It'd be unfair

This topic has been discussed previously. Just as Eggshell said, once a person is dead, so should be their communication.

Gravetalk would give an unfair disadvantage to those who have made their kills. It is also the reason why there is a 15 second respawn timer.

I personally feel like it gives no real disadvantage to the killer. All competitive games are played with some form of communication (such as Mumble) and the moment you hit someone it's called out (at least in 6's, Highlander can get a bit chaotic) so that your team knows where to focus fire - that's why it's called TEAM Fortress 2. There's absolutely no way that you're going to get away with a backstab without getting called out in any serious game. In addition, if I'm going to play some pubs with my friends, I'm going to try to coordinate our actions (over Steam Voice Chat or Mumble or Skype or whatever) so that we can win the game - and that includes calling out targets and spies, especially if I'm a medic meaning that I am keeping count of enemies and their approximate health and location.

On the other hand, Lotus' servers ARE public, so the people who call out threats and targets are rare.

@Darwin. Your view is understandable when it comes to smaller competitive games where communication is key. The gravetalk situation is a bit different when there are 12+ random people on each team, hunting your ass down.

There is also the case of people who may rage/bitch immediately after dying; The respawn timer is a nice cool-down. I feel I would be guilty of this at times.

Aye. The reason is to point out locations and because lotus doesn't give performance altering things to the game. It retains the balance. One thing that would be good if this did go ahead (although unlikely) is then at least death-talk would be recorded and kept (currently is not)

I've just looked up some things on the TF2 wiki and apparently gravetalk on a vanilla server (like Lotus servers are) is only possible with alltalk on. Considering that Krash has said Lotus' server will stay vanilla (except for the administration and donator SourceMod build), it's unlikely that the gravetalk plugin would be implemented, and alltalk would probably annoy everyone.

I'd like to see a !votealltalk (and !votecrit for that matter, but that's for another discussion) chat command which would trigger an alltalk vote for the round in progress. And as you all probably witnessed, alltalk gives some

when used properly.

But that's just my opinion.

That made me laugh hardcore. Gravetalk is enabled on high comp matches, plus 3rd party voice systems so it's moot anyways.

But, yo noob. Already made a topic some time ago. It was no dice.

So you're saying this isn't why gravetalk is disabled? The question wasn't is the policy just, the question was simply why the policy...

Doesn't make much sense on an FPS, since if you have no mic, are deaf, have a speech impediment, are a girl, or are a young kid, you'd probably prefer to type than talk, and that's really the only good time to take a moment to type something. Any other time and you're either wasting time idle in spawn or risk getting killed while you're typing.

Often I spent the respawn timers typing something useful or a reply to a comment and hit enter when I respawn.

No time wasted, no time AFK but yet you can easily get a good reply in :)

I do that too, but that only works if 1) You don't hit enter too soon in anticipation and 2) Your line of communication is only one-way and only involves one thing to say.

Like it was mentioned before. There's the possibility of slight "cheating". If someone is doing that with friends then it doesn't really matter. But on a more massive scale it could unbalance things too much. Especially if one team is smarter than the other, this would further hurt the losing team.

However we do now have alltalk on round end, until the next round starts.
