Totalbiscuit, The Cynical Brit, "attacked" By Game Dev. Please Watch

Recommended Posts

Ive never really seen much of TBs stuff (im more a YogNaught) but I didn't realise how formal and professional his channel was and how serious the behind the scenes things are. Youtube is becoming more and more professional in terms of big channels, so there rules need to change. I predict a shitstorm over at Youtube, and hopefully they'll change some of the rules on copyright. Though how much I don't really know.

Self-explanatory. Youtube is run by basically nobody, so rather than upholding what they said they would do with partner programs, they let companies submit copyright claims to an automated system. It's been abused before, and now it's happened again.

I don't expect any change from Google.

What I don't understand is why TB formally asked for permission and was then granted. They then reacted in this manner only to TB. None of the other channels with more or less the same content was touched, as far as we know. Some even saying how bad the game is in the title.

It was almost like a direct attack. Very poor performance by this developer.

I think TB's review was by far the hardest hitting, and the dev might not have been expecting the shitstorm that resulted from it.

Indie game devs like these will get absolutely nowhere without a critique. Even as harsh as his and many others. The only way to move forward as a dev is to learn from mistakes you made in design or w/e.

I too think he just wasn't ready for the ensuing criticism, or was still too upset that he dumped $10k of his own money into the kickstarter, and it still turned out bad. I'd be upset too, lemme tell ya

I'm not much of TB fan, as I find him a tad vain and audacious. Also he abuses the "look at me I'm British" thing way too much.

However nerdcubed (a much better game critic imo) did a protest video in response to this incident which I saw. The whole situation looks very fishy and the dev seems to be acting in a very cruel, calculating manner.

Nice, I must of missed that video. Thanks for the post.

I agree once again, the devs did a poor job at...whatever it was they were trying to do

p.s. I don't think he really has a lawyer :o

Yup. That whole kickstarter thing was really bad.

No matter what my opinion is on TB, I'm hoping he and his network can get this fixed. These copyright strikes are a threat to their livelihood.

And many many many others. If there is no critiques of games, game devs everywhere, bethesda, 2k, EA all of them, will lose a lot of $$$$$$. If there was no video(s) about this game, someone bought it and hated it cuz it's bad, (which it is), they may not ever buy another game from this dev again.

Before I buy a game, I ALWAYS watch some kind of critique video, not always TB's, but a video none-the-less. 100% of the games I buy, I make absolute sure I want to actually pay for them first.

Absolutely hilarious, the devs really fucked up. The first vid you linked really goes into how it was soley directed at TB.

But you have to blame the system, not YT for the DMCA take down. YT (Google) wants the least liability and so it is often used to nuke things that might not be breaking any rules. (on why it was taken down so quickly, not that YT is to blame for *why* it got taken down)

And this video (one mentioned by TB) really shows how shitty this game is.

I used to buy Creative Assembly Total War games as soon as they came out until it became clear with later games that they were shipping them with game breaking bugs that they never bothered to fix, even when they were reported by huge amounts of people on the CA forums. I've never bought a game from them since.

Never seen the game and I am indifferent to TB. But the developer is obviously wrong on this issue. I have heard the game mentioned before but now I will intentionally never check it out if they are going to pull stunts like this. From everything I am reading about it online, it sounds like a lot of other people will be avoiding the game because of this too.

The game was hilariously broken, questionably funded, and somehow got steam greenlighted through semi-bribery from the dev.

Apparently the dev's retracted their takedown and the video is back up. But that's okay because I already saw the video when it was linked on Reddit to the mirror on Dailymotion or w/e it was.

The game was hilariously broken, questionably funded, and somehow got steam greenlighted through semi-bribery from the dev.

The game wasn't funded by any kickstarted, they never got to their goal of $50k (British Pounds, not USD) within a month so the people who (besides the devs making contributions) never had any money withdrawn from their accounts.

It was probably TB's network addressing how ridiculous the situation was. The dev doesn't seem the type to just give in.

edit-

Official Statement regarding the YouTube video “WTF Is... : Day One: Garry's Incident ?” from TotalBiscuit

We sent TotalBiscuit a Steam key on September 26th, giving him permission to evaluate Day One: Garry’s Incident.

Monetizing wasn’t mentioned in our communications and it was an error on our part to not have clarified the issue.

It was for that particular fact that Wild Games Studio had asked the video’s removal.

After the video was made unavailable, we have taken seriously the reaction from the community concerning freedom of expression.

We strongly believe in the freedom of expression of people and medias and have removed our copyright claim.

Wild Games Studio didn’t intend on preventing anyone from using their right to freedom of expression.

For this reason, Wild Games Studio sincerely apologizes to TotalBiscuit and anyone who felt that their freedom of speech was denied.

They probably realized how much they'd screwed themselves.

What kind of critic asks a company for access to their product in order to review it but does not make money off their reviews???? The developer is a moron.

Edit:

Holy hell. I just watched, or rather listened, to that rant from Nerd Plays and I want to reach through the Internet and beat the guy talking. With every other word he is pounding on his desk and it gets picked up by his microphone. If that's his job to make youtube content he needs to be set on fire....

I don't know what they expected, if they've watched a single one of TB's videos, giving him a game like that,

(no fov slider?!)

Please don't take that as a deterrent. Nerdcubed is one of my favorite youtubers, and really is very good normally. He was just understandably very angry.

This is his normal content, which I love so dearly.

I've been watching nerdcubed and it is really really good. He's pretty funny, too. If you haven't watch his train simulator 2014, hilarious.
