Either way, it depends what game devs believe is "hateful, harassing speech". Surely this is good PR, but beyond that, does "I think Depression Quest is a shit game" (mentioning that game simply because of your comment) constitute as a 'hateful, harassing speech' or fair criticism? Surely saying something like "<insert name here> can go choke on a bag of dicks" is definitely a hateful comment, but as is evident from the imgur gallery you linked, hate goes both ways, and the more popular end usually gets their way.

Depression Quest can be hardly called a game because its missing the key features (interactive ? don't think so. enjoyable ? hardly). Saying "Depression quest is shit" is a straight forward answer. If game is shit, than.. its shit. You could say "Depression Quest is unbelievably boring and contains no interesting features, therefore is bad" but we live in a world were everything is just simplified, in this case, "Depression Quest is shit". I personally think that calling a bad game shit is not a hateful comment because well, (example) Island Light is shit, you can't deny that. Depression Quest is more like a personal diary, and I don't think personal diaries count as a game, therefore Depression Quest was and is called a bad game. Zoe Quinn being arrogant could not deal with criticism, so she decide to make up the story about internet being bad to her, in order to gain some attention. It is normal for devs to take their games very personal because they put their time and (not always) effort in to making of the game, but taking down any kind of bad publicity or negative comments is not a good way to go. People like Jim Sterling or Total Biscuit deal with this kind of behaviour all the time as they criticise bad games in their own way, which some people see as hateful.

That is a serious apt comparison. This is why I like iSeries, Everyones nice as fucking pie at lan, cos all the shitfaced trolling fuckers are scared they're gunna get punched in the fact if they chat shit in person.

I'm thinking ibm and as400... and you made me shudder.

On topic:

I've been reading regarding this Zoe Quinn and holy fuck. That's my only reaction. Holy. Fuck.

I feel bad for her ex-bf who got played like some schmuck (always wanted to use that word). I feel *really* bad about Wizardchan who basically got harassed like hell over something that isn't even *their* doing. Plus from what I've read Zoe has a disorder. Something something obsessive disorder? I forgot what it was called and read about it a while ago. They make all the drama about themselves, make sure they're always in the middle of attention. Like say you've got a cut finger, they'll go they have cancer, even if they haven't. Pretty fucked up and abusive people all around.

My general stance is that people have become more verbal. Not just online, but in real life too. It's just easier to troll someone online as you can never know who's behind the screen >>

Technically, but not directly.

The feminist/sjw/zoe crew are going about trying to bash gamers (a bit silly) on the twitersphere using the hashtag #DescribeGamersin4Words or something like that.
