Carry Tips/Good Carries?

Recommended Posts

So a lot of u may know that i play mostly the hard carry/offlane position in Dota 2.

I play a range of heroes like AM, Ursa, Lycan, SB, Troll, Alchemist, PA, and sometimes even Tide and Axe.

Does anyone have any tips for how to carry better, and any other hero recommendations? Thx :3

I'm probably the wrong person to offer suggestions as I play purely support, its so situational depending on your strategy and the opposing teams picks...so that kind of leaves it down to your own personal preferences.  I can recommend this guys guides though, I've more hours watching them than playing dota!  Look for his "hero commentaries" as he explains the hero and how to play him.

I'd recommend just playing lots of different heros and seeing which abilities, items you like and whilst you're learning just build your choices around that.  I wouldn't really worry about strategy and stuff until you have figured out who you find fun to play.

I played Witch Doctor, then Lich, then Lina....and then I played them a LOT...like about 100 games each.  Then I felt like I knew enough about the game and how to play some heroes well for my skill level.  The other way to do it, also the way which Purge recommends, is to play all of the heroes twice...this gives you an idea of who does what, who you like, who you want to avoid or you cannot handle when you are up against so you can work on countering them in some way.  Purge reckons it takes about 3 months and about a hundred games before you stop feeling like a noob and it was pretty much like that for me.

Lol I know purge too (how can u not???) I watch a ton of his vids. I have about 130 games logged on dota. I felt I was pretty good for the amount of hrs/games I had. Then I met possibly the most idiotic windrunners and chens ever. Killsteals, farmsteals, goldsteals. Granted, the chen was possibly the best chen i had seen personally, but they pretty much wanted to support carry. (I was derping around as drow). Their insults kinda made me feel like a nub :( I made the mistake of not muting them and I actually tried really hard and ended up with like a 0-11 record something like that. Was reported by all 9 people in the game XD. Mostly due to Chen spamming Drow is a fag and idiot. Plz Report into chat for 20 minutes. Main reason I posted this, i felt like I was doing something wrong lol

Edit: That was possibly, other than my first game, the worst Dota 2 performance of my career. I had never felt so outplayed in my life

I'm not sure if i'm experienced enough to be helpfull, but i can give it a shot right?

For starters, you ask for tips to carry better.

  • First things first, make sure you can LH with the hero's you play most of the time. Pretty much every hero has different base damage, so its not the same for every one of them.
  • Secondly, be very careful. I know it sounds very selfish, but as long as you don't die, you don't lose any gold. So if your support Lich is in danger, don't go in way to far to try to save him. This will probably result in you both dying, and you lose both gold and farm time.
  • For my thirth point, i would like to use the match you described as an example.

A lot of playing a good carry depends on if your carry is actually good in the match up. For example, you don't want to pick a Medusa when they picked an Anti Mage, because he will just drain your mana and thats the biggest strength of the hero.

You mention having a Windrunner and a Chen on your team, and you played Drow yourself. I have no clue about your other teammates or the opponent, but i can tell you that Drow needs some tanky heroes on her side (Bristle, Axe, Tiny) who can stand in front of her so that she doesn't die immediately. Windrunner and Chen are not going to live very long, so thats not a good combination with Drow.

At last, you ask for hero recommendations: ever tried Luna? :)

I thought I'd take a look and see just how much he is picked....this is what the DotaBuff blog had to say relatively recently...

"I really do not know why this hero is so low in Win Rate [currently 40% win rate and picked 5% of the time]. He might not be the strongest of carries, but given there is no Ancient Apparition on the enemy team he can be rather hard to deal with.

Add to it the fact that you can effectively build him to hit six times in a second by a 30 minute mark and you get a ravaging monster on your hands.

Seriously, though, the hero does require some sort of a buff and it has to be not to the gold gains from Goblins Greed, which is rather irrelevant in the current patch."

Interesting.  I've seen him in a handful of games and he's never really stood out in my memory (9 games played against him and a 56% win rate against him).  I do remember one game though where he completely mullered our team.  I suppose at "normal" level you could pretty much flip a coin as to whether the person playing him has any clue on how to play him though.

I'd say stick with playing him KoKoRoro.  If no one is playing him then they probably won't know how to counter him if you get relatively decent at playing him.

Lol he was the first carry I ever played, so I consider myself decent :P
