DarkClaw 0 #1 Posted August 19, 2008 HOLY SHIT! DREAM COME TRUE! Arena mode... if it's really what I believe it is, I love it. Small map, hp packs and water are rare or non-existent, kill everybody to win... just wow. I'm super psyched! For once, instead of trying to cap the point or steal intel (usually dying numerous times in the process ), I'll just focus on wiping out the whole team... might raise my rank. Especially looking forward to Lumberyard! How bout you guys? Do you think arena mode will be a big hit, or will it sink fast? Be sure to post what you chose and why. Doxt 1 #3 Posted August 19, 2008 It sounds different, not meant to replace ctf/cp maps but rather to be a fresh change of pace.

monkey 0 #6 Posted August 19, 2008 Sounds great. I love the fact that Lumberyard is an alpine map. I was getting a bit tired of seeing every level covered in brown dirt.

Nket 16 #8 Posted August 19, 2008 tf_weaponcrits_0 in order for it to be a true test of skill. also i demand we have no weapons crits on arena servers. ALSO YA F'IN RIGHT!
Melissia 7 #9 Posted August 19, 2008 I demand weapon crits in arena severs, because it'll be less fun otherwise
Nket 16 #10 Posted August 19, 2008 then its not arena combat, its just who crits first..
Alucard winrar 0 #11 Posted August 19, 2008 The maps sound like their built more for 10V10 or less so hopefully mana will keep it that way. That and nocrits would make it an epic test of skill. Practice tonight mustbe on arena!
Arc_Angel 0 #12 Posted August 19, 2008 My crits always miss so i guess it will be better for me. Never mind figured it out.
friedrice 8 #13 Posted August 21, 2008 I thought arena was a nice change of pace but I don't see myself playing a lot of it. It just reminds me of playing some sort of Quake team DM, and I would much rather play that than TF2's arena. I enjoy the big team battles better. But this is just personal opinion. RhinoX 0 #14 Posted August 22, 2008 I like arena mode, the only problem is i don't understand the whole concept about it yet. You automatically get assigned to Red or Blu team, you kill the team that you aren't on, and once the timer goes down any team has a chance to win by capturing the control point? is that the point of arena mode? silvio 0 #15 Posted August 22, 2008 If I wanted to be playing arena mode I could just play counterstrike.I prefer a large scale war which is respawning, a small short battle is what I consider arena.
BobRoss 0 #16 Posted August 22, 2008 I wasn't too sure about this before...but since playing it last night for a while I really liked it. The main positive as I see it is that it really discourages newb players...which I guess is a mixed blessing...but I enjoyed not having to worry to much that the person I was healing was a complete idiot...although I still saw my share of newb mistakes. The best part is, in the last minute or so of the game, all the newbs are sitting there watching the good players who are still left...I suppose that's gotta be educational for them. The only thing I've got mixed feelings about is the sitting out for a round if you're on the losing team. While its a bit annoying and boring, I did see a bit of a purpose to it. The constantly changing teams kept me from being frustrated by a consistently unbalanced team, which happens a lot on other maps. The downside is that as a medic, I'm usually memorizing names of players and checking out who's good on my team so I know who to uber, and who to prioritize healing, as well as other little things like, if a pyro comes do I keep healing them and trust them to take the pyro out themselves or do I take out my syringe gun and do it myself. Since the teams were changing constantly, it was hard to remember anyone except for the occasional exceptional players and friends and guildmates. And more involved strategies that require 3-4 people working together are flat-out impossible to develop for the same reason.
Camail 1 #17 Posted August 25, 2008 Subbing ruins this mode. Absolutely ruins it. Valve phails. I want a 12v12 max that could prevent 32 slot servers from using all slots. I know people are working on a by-pass to the subbing, but I guarantee it'll make its 16v16. That will make it suck very very very badly. Please keep it at 11v11 mana, PLZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. Apparently Valve allows it, you just need to turn on Tourney mode. Heh I left it running on one of the servers and came to the worst team names ever... We have 2 Arena servers so we'll be running both configs no problem .

Organix 0 #20 Posted August 26, 2008 I think the small team sizes are pretty fun too. When you're playing 5v5 the choice of character class and teammate cooperation becomes all important. I was recently in a game where one of our 5 was picking sniper on lumberyard, not a good move. Of course we lost every game we had a sniper until the teams were switched up, these arena maps don't really lend themselves to camping after all. Still, interesting strategies and team combinations have surfaced because of arena mode. Different, but interesting

Melissia 7 #22 Posted August 29, 2008 The small team sizes and the fact that you only have one life really makes spying rather annoying and difficult. And pyros far too easy. Ah well... Also, camping can work-- only if you have good teamwork . Defending an engie until they have a dispensor+level 3 sentry up can make or break a stalemate. Nket 16 #23 Posted August 29, 2008 On arena i pyro rush for 3+ kills every time. if i have a medic to come back to then i can go for the whole game. UNLESS they have a smart engi
Melissia 7 #24 Posted August 29, 2008 I know, it's really ghey that 90% of games are either a pyro rush owning, or two pyro rushes duking it out.
