JonasV 9 #1 Posted August 23, 2009 (edited) I don't know about anyone else, but I am really getting tired of playing with/against people who have 300+ ping. I just left one of the arena servers and there were 5 people with 250-400 ping. It really becomes a problem when they are playing fast runspeed classes (ie Pyro, scout) and warping all over the map, similarly getting backstabbed by a laggy spy who is 5 feet in front of you is highly irritating. So I would like to suggest that a max ping cap be put on the servers of approximately 250 (I would like to see lower, but that may not be possible), typically you see votekicking of people when they reach this limit anyway. I have played on servers before where the console will kick someone when they are above a certain ping and it seems to work out very well. Anyway I would just like to throw this suggestion out and see what people think. Edited August 23, 2009 by JonasV
ScarletRose 1 #2 Posted August 23, 2009 I've noticed the lag kicking on the console is only a filler message given when someone uses connect ip in the console and it kicks someone who doesn't have a reserved slot. Because it's kicked me when a recruit joined (before I donated) and I had a small amount of latency (26). The problem I have with this is I get random lag spikes especially now that Cox is upgrading all of their stuff around my neighborhood. The lag spikes only last for 5 seconds and I'd be highly annoyed of being auto-removed consistently due to a 5 second spike on my latency. On a good day I only have 5-60 Latency, depending on the server. The East coast it lingers anywhere around 80 to 120. The west coast servers, are obviously the lowest for me. The lag spikes, I've seen bring me up to as high as 600 latency on WC, and eventually they even out within a quick minute. If a timer on play of the person in question is workable, I'd suggest that. Since I know I'm not the only one who gets random lag spikes in TF2, however rare or frequent.
JonasV 9 #3 Posted August 24, 2009 Yeah, I'm not talking about the people who get random lag spikes due to their ISP or simply live update or windows update hogging the bandwidth for a few. I am concerned with the people who consistently sit at 250+.
DeJaDeW 83 #4 Posted August 24, 2009 Yeah a simple max ping plugin does the job.
Melissia 7 #5 Posted August 24, 2009 It IS annoying to be constantly lagsniped by mediocre snipers *coughs, and looks at certain Lotus recruits*
Mana 3,867 #6 Posted August 24, 2009 We do have a ping kicker. It works on average ping. It's less active unless the server is 2/3rds full. A sustained average ping of 500-999 should get you kicked .
JonasV 9 #7 Posted August 24, 2009 Any way this could get set to perhaps 300 avg?

+Henry Spencer 117 #9 Posted August 24, 2009 250-300 ms ping cap would be great. There is nothing more annoying than going to a 2fort server for some huntsfagging, only to have to switch to a regular rifle because some faggot of a Ruskie can't stay on servers in his own goddamn country and constantly bodyshots me from behind walls. Then I have to headshot him almost instantaneously, since the game is essentially wound back a quarter of a second for him to line up that shot perfectly and hit me. JonasV 9 #10 Posted August 24, 2009 (edited) Yeah that's pretty much my whole reasoning for posting this. Sniper is annoying, but what bugs me even more is 300+ ping scouts running around and their latency cause them to appear and disappear 5-10ft away form where they last were. Similarly I'm tired of getting back-stabbed buy a spy facing me 5ft way or freeze-cammed nowhere near where I died. I am starting to get the impression recently, that people are staring to actively abuse their high latency to use these tactics against other. Graedus 9 #11 Posted August 25, 2009 It IS annoying to be constantly lagsniped by mediocre snipers *coughs, and looks at certain Lotus recruits* Hey! I only average 80ish!
kuttlewug 28 #12 Posted August 25, 2009 I've never really looked at my ping on any server but it plays fine so its not a problem for me
Mana 3,867 #13 Posted August 25, 2009 it clearly works so well, cause i see moleman play with 800 ping 5-10mins at a time granted he is(was?) a donator, but hes not the only one Donators do get immunity against it...obviously. Though since we don't have an aggressive ping kicker it's not a listed feature. Also every kick, ban, autokick, afk kick, whatever other kick makes us lose points with Valve's server ranking system. We have a lot of bans (I banned at least 5 mygot groups, not counting all the other shitty clams and what not). I wanna add more automatic kicks and bans for certain things... Soon enough we'll lose more points than we gain. Maybe I should move AFK kicker, ping kicker and other stuff to only kick people if they have been online for 16+ minutes. That way we don't lose points .
Melissia 7 #14 Posted August 25, 2009 Lmao, negative points!
Rydawg 14 #15 Posted August 25, 2009 Negative points, what exactly does that do? I chased a spy the other day as scout and he was warping all over the place and eventually got the solo cap cause he ran/warped at mach 12. Just give some of the more known players on each server admin rights, I know i play a ton on stock, as well as phantom n funky.
Melissia 7 #16 Posted August 25, 2009 As do I, along with stock 2.
Mana 3,867 #17 Posted August 25, 2009 Negative points, what exactly does that do? Gets you de-listed from the server browser.
Moleman 0 #18 Posted August 26, 2009 it clearly works so well, cause i see moleman play with 800 ping 5-10mins at a time Yeah it happens..
Link2086 5 #19 Posted August 26, 2009 Gets you de-listed from the server browser. So what's to stop a large enough group of people from getting themselves kicked and/or banned from one server en masse in order to make that server's points plummet? The coordination required would make it prohibitive but it's certainly possible. I would hope Valve thought of that.
Mana 3,867 #20 Posted August 26, 2009 So what's to stop a large enough group of people from getting themselves kicked Nothing. They would just need a big group of people who could offset any positive points gained by the server for a long enough time that it gets de-listed. Link2086 5 #21 Posted August 27, 2009 Nothing. They would just need a big group of people who could offset any positive points gained by the server for a long enough time that it gets de-listed. Hm, okay. Like I said, you would think that Valve would have considered that.
ePsoN 47 #22 Posted August 31, 2009 Well..I play with 100 to 150 ping because the servers are at the United States and I am from Europe..Takes time to reach the destination.
Bombz 31 #23 Posted August 31, 2009 They did it because players were whining on steam forums about fake player counts. Which Lotus uses if I'm not mistaken, it's not an issue because the servers are normally full.
