Keys are now valued at a minimum of 4 ref. Yeah... That happened.

No longer a Sexy King:^) 5,592 #13 Posted March 31, 2013 I believe the keys went high on price because tf2 is f2p, you can have a premium alt acc for weapon drops with like 3 bucks. Also most kids no longer have access to the parent's credit card due to spending them on keys but as well ppl finally learned that 2 for a key that will give you most likely a shit strange weapon is not worth it. TLDR: Tf2 is free to play which means lot of alt accounts and less ppl are spending money on keys because they're not worth it.

Not that yours doesn't make sense, but I just also assume that people are out to make profit and traders seem to be getting greedier and greedier. It doesn't matter if a key is really worth 3 ref because most people want to make double their profits, so they will ask for 5.
point 2,268 #15 Posted March 31, 2013 I think the actual reason is slightly more complicated than that. The problem began with tf2 now running a trading store that makes use of actual money. Now this may take a while to explain but I will try my best. In TF2 there is in effect a limitless amount of Refined metal available to players. Every Thursday the drop rate resets and once again everyone has a source of income, albeit a small one. Okay, now the complicated bit. Keys can be bought for £2.50 on the steam store. The important thing to remember throughout this explanation is that Keys have in essence always remained at the same price. So back in the day, people who trusted each other would use PayPal to pay through the nose for things like Buds, Max's, Unusuals etc. and this was okay. Why? Because, there was no value persay on Ref. Now, over time Valve begins to notice that people are using PayPal to scam other people out of their money, more than paying £300 for an imaginary hat can be considered scamming. So Valve comes along to "fix" the problem with a secure trading website that uses money, as a way of making sure no-one get scams. However this is where the problem lies. Now with this new trading system anything is fair game and that includes Refined metal and Keys. So now people are selling Refined. But how do they know what to value the Ref at? Simply they use how much a key costs, take the amount of Ref required for a Key then divide the price of a Key by the amount of Ref. 2.50/2.50= 1.00. So at the beginning people would sell Ref at £1. But, very quickly a problem arises. The ref falls in price, because everyone has like I mentioned before has access to it. However, as the price of ref falls, the price for keys remains the same, so for people who do not trade with money Keys become more valuable with Ref retaining the same value. Tl; dr The TF2 trading depot run by Valve has fucked up the economy.

Orbit - dBs 179 #17 Posted March 31, 2013 Whoa whoa keys are now worth at least 4 ref? Do you know what I could get for 4 ref? A decent stange item or a fairly good hat from someone who doesn't know but about tf2 economy(I do admit I have scammed some kids)
Vaginal Hubris 2,659 #18 Posted March 31, 2013 I didn't think you could sell ref on the market?
Barbaro 466 #19 Posted April 2, 2013 Jeez, has Lotus turned a blind eye to trading lately? Check out the Market, some of the TF2 Community sites, SteamRep, hell, even TF2OP, you'd be surprised at how things are looking now, then they were not too long ago. Who remembers keys at 2 Refined?
