Tf2 Freezing And Lagging, Configuration Options.

Recommended Posts

LOL. It seems that the issue has re-opened :/ I attached some screenshots of the net_graph while it freezes/stutters.

I didn't change the config at all after the reinstall and -autoconfig btw.

Can you let me know if there's an issue that you can identify from the net_graph? (I'm not quite good at reading it :/)

Since you already posted your network config, you can always revert back. But try some of these in your autoexec

//Network Settings
//================
rate 60000
cl_updaterate 67
cl_cmdrate 67
cl_interp_ratio 1
cl_lagcompensation 1
cl_pred_optimize 2
cl_smooth 0
cl_smoothtime 0.01

If you could run through the net_graph 1-4 while you play to see if you get weird spikes because if you are on a good connection and your computer can handle the game it should be a fairly level graph. (some spikes during battle due to explosions and what not)

Steam support is also good at helping you fix these things too. They spent 6 straight days going back and forth with me until we discovered a faulty wireless driver.

FkL3b.jpg

I have this random freezing which occurs every so often on any server. My FPS and Ping are at normal levels, My internet connection is 15 MBPS. I do experience choking during my freezing and immediately after. It hardly ever drops many packets at most 3-4 at times. It's really annoying cause I would be walking around on the open field or battlements or something and then I would just freeze there, easy target to kill.

My custom options in the config.cfg:

rate 20000

cl_updaterate 101

cl_cmdrate 101

cl_cmdbackup 3

cl_resend 6

ex_interp 0.1

cl_interp 0

cl_smooth 0

cl_smoothtime 0.1

Are there any suggestions you have on changing the options or are there any other solutions to my issue? All feedback is appreciated.

Some Specifications that may come in handy:

Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250

Processor: AMD PhenomII X4 830 @ 2.8 GHz

RAM: 8.00 GB

Operating System: Windows 7 Professional, Service Pack 1, 64-Bit

Sound Controller: Realtek High Def Audio

Let me know if you need additional Information. Thanks in Advanced!

Some additional information, Usually the game continue's and I can see others move. But I'm just stuck in place. Every so often everything on the server freezes though. The game itself rarely crashes.

Isn't your video card a bit on the subpar side? The desktop I use, has a GT 430, and gives me some questionable lags and freezes, and it's got the exact CPU ratiing *But Athlon Black something* and 4 GB, with Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit. The video, is beautiful, yet I get sometimes some really odd lags. tt started up after the Pyromania Update, and almost every single update, gives me some bigger lag issues, then dies down after sometime...then starts again once an update is released.

The problem is likely in the connection, not the graphics, since it's not fps drop but internet lag. Try disabling anything that uses Internet - set antivirus to game mode, make sure Windows isn't updating, exit the torrent app, etc. Also, Skype and Dropbox.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, it's not quite that decent of a video card but I didn't have these issues with it since around mid-April. It was playing smoothly and running perfectly since November. I'll be getting a new video card in about a few weeks though.

If you can't even get into the main menu of COD: BO II without lag, then the video card needs to be replaced. This prebuilt HP unit, 7 years ago, gave me a nice 25 FPS with nearly no lag...oh man, and the games, those were addicting. Only upgrade that's been done to it is that video card.

What background programs are you running by the way? Darwin brought up a great point, and I'm going to supplement it, see if it's perhaps your connection. (I stick by your video card, it displeases me!)

Once you check your background items, and ensure your AV isn't sapping your PC, take these two tests, both of them, and copy pasta the results. We can help you identify if it's a possible internet issue. (Although I'm doubting it is, I could be wrong!)

Thanks for replying. During tf2 I usually just have steam and microsoft security essentials running. I believe there isn't a game mode for that anti-virus. Everything else that is open is pretty much a system process.

Im typically sitting around the 125-150 FPS range while I play.

Test results:

Yes, My upload speeds are quite horrendous.

Edit: Do you guys have suggestions for changes on the config I posted up?

My upload is around 100kb/s max, and I still get decent ping. TF2 uses around 10kb/s in upload and 30 kb/s in download at most times, so if your internet can't handle that, it means something is interfering.

I have read somewhere (maybe even around here) that Road Runner throttles internet speed by certain lanes, and that Steam (I'm guessing TF2 as well?) happens to be in the slow one. Now, not living anywhere near US, and knowing about US ISP's about as much as I know about nuclear physics, I can't tell you anything more than "I heard somewhere", but you might want to open up a ticket with your ISP - that will be your best bet. configs will only get you this far - you can raise your interpolation values, and lower the rate (which wrecks the experience) but that's it.

Maybe run a system scan with some anti-malware or try reinstalling Windows? It's a big step, but it's the only thing you can do on your end.

Oh wow, that is a horrible fucking upload, haha.

Well, the internet connection is stable enough it seems, although the jitter leaves me worry, I have the same ISP, yet no jitter. When's the last time you reset the router?

Only Steam? (AV doesn't count, you're not disabling that.) Then this is very strange, I don't agree with the use of MSE, because it's annoying for a gamer like me, but if floats your boat, why not?

When's the last time you turned back the pendulum? You know, WIPED the entire HDD clean, and did a cold reset of your router? (As well as calling a techie at Road Runner and asking if they can reset your connection on your end, or coaxing them to do it, it helps a lot) Got your Windows 7 DVD around somewhere?

I've never heard of that before, and I'm with Road Runner...but I agree with talking to them, they may be able to explain why, or as I'd prefer, reset his actual connection on their end. Nothing like a refresh to get the speed going up again.

I'm also agreeing with the re-install, I doubt it's his AV, it might just be a bug, or something on his PC that's sapping his bandwidth, like an unneeded process or an old program that's remnants have run loose.

I reset the router yesterday, and today as well. What do you use for anti-virus? Hm. Wiped about a month ago, it's a new HDD. Yeah. I may consider reinstalling windows or contacting Road Runner. Thanks.

I have one more question. Do glitches result in freezing?

http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Glitches

^^ I've noticed that I experience about 3/4 of the glitches listed under Windows. And the freezing results shortly afterwards.

I'm using Avast Home. http://www.avast.com/en-us/index

If your installation of Windows was a month ago, then it may not be your programs, but the internet itself, which wouldn't hurt calling Road Runner.

Hah, I've noticed a lot of these glitches happen, I tend to blame Mana and move on, even when my screen's all buggy and glitchy, broken HUD, character paints failing, the works.(Sorry Mana) If the game itself is acting more odd than normal, try verifying the integrity of it by right clicking on the game in the Steam Client, Properties, Verify Game Cache/Content/et centra, and do a Defrag, if it needs one.

Thanks for the help, I did a reinstall and the issue seems to have disappeared.

Obvi had the idea for a list of answers to FAQs or problems people have come across where they found the answer.  I'll update the OP with them.

Refilling Health and Mana quickly at the fountain
As soon as you enter the fountain area to replenish your health and mana, move all items which increase your health or mana (including strength and intelligence stat increase items) in your inventory to your stash.  This puts your mana and health down to its much lower base levels.  Then when you're fully replenished just add the items back into your inventory from your stash and see your mana/health capacity and levels jump up saving you valuable time.  When you add items which increase your health or mana and your health and mana are already full, the increase in health and mana is always automatically filled up to its new higher capacity.

Arcane Boot/Soul Ring extra mana trick
This works using the same principle as the "Refilling Health and Mana quickly at the fountain" trick mentioned above and tread switching.  Just drop your intelligence stat increase items or items which increase your mana capacity before using the boots or ring and then pick them up afterwards to increase the effectiveness of your boots/ring.  It can make the difference between being able to use one ability or a combo so it's worth doing.  Note, don't try this if there are enemy close by or invis heros on the enemy team.  They could snipe your items.

Empty bottle/ally teleporting from fountain trick
If an ally has teleported to you from the fountain they are still affected by the regeneration bonus for several seconds.  If you quickly give them an empty bottle it will be refilled instantly.  This video shows this and other useful bottle techniques.

      Drop tranquils whilst jungling
If you bought tranquils, providing there are no invis heros or people missing on the map you can drop your tranquils whilst clear a camp so that when you pick them back up again they instantly start to heal you.

Hi, My name is Chris P. Lettuce here and on steam, and I was banned last week from one of the High tower servers that i regularly visit. I was given absolutely no warning, and received no messages after my ban. All I could think of is two guys on the other team wanted to use only snipers, no one was doing it, i was a pyro, and then I was banned. I was wondering If I could please be un-banned?

With "Overwatch" coming out, I wouldn't be surprised if some of us hop on the bandwagon of the new cartoony FPS.
I can't wait for it to become more popular and start competetive matches after it's release. I know I'm going to get it.

Just a word for now. Ciao~

If you've bought the excellent "Banished" and would like help with it, give me a shout as I've got a reasonable understanding of the game mechanics. It can be tricky getting going as although the game looks very much like other similar games, it's not and playing it like you have played other games can make things go tits up pretty quickly.
      It's an awesome game.
