Banished: getting started

Recommended Posts

If you've bought the excellent "Banished" and would like help with it, give me a shout as I've got a reasonable understanding of the game mechanics. It can be tricky getting going as although the game looks very much like other similar games, it's not and playing it like you have played other games can make things go tits up pretty quickly.

It's an awesome game.

Interesting. Have you figured out why they were dying? My first thought is are they working too far away and when they go for food they starve before they get there?

Here is a screen from my current game showing (if I remember the time frame correctly) what I built asap. Note that I did not build them in numerical order but the order specified below:

wm3lKR1.jpg

Roughly what I did was this:

  • Build enough houses to house everyone, use stone preferably as it is warmer so requires less firewood and should survive a tornado (I might be wrong about the tornado xD)
  • Build 2 fishing ports and hunters lodge
  • Build a woodcutter and storage yard for early game firewood and later, trading
  • Build another house or two to encourage population growth
  • Put most people in food production so we have food and leather asap
  • Have the woodcutter working immediately from start up logs
  • Have foresters when there is a food stock of at least one seasons food in the barn
  • Build a forester for early game logs and later, trading
  • Build school
  • Build blacksmith
  • Build tailor

What would I do different? Use lots of gatherers to get early food (you only need 100 food per person per year). Three fishing ports only just got me enough food.

Note: Always try and have food maxed out with people working. When building after the houses were built I had half building and half gathering resources (logs and stone) until I had that list done. A lot of the time I had only one or two building/getting resources as most were on food/cutting firewood.

Additional note: gatherers require a hut to work from which is missing in the above. You will also need a herbalist pretty soon after you have most of those buildings up. Place a herbalists hut in a close by forest and they will soon have a little stockpile of herbs. People take the herbs to the herbalist to treat minor ailments. They're like a local quack.

I've only been playing about a week though in the game total so I am obviously no expert but I can get things moving along nicely so far...with a little help from the speed button from time to time smile.png

*edit*: updated wuth note on gatherers.

I have been putting gathering huts next to wood cutters as they replant the trees stuff seems to grow faster.

Yeah that works well. I gave also heard that having two foresters to one woodcutter works well. I think for balancing out the stock as cutters get through logs pretty quick. I tend to have one forest on logs/firewood and then a separate forest containing gatherers, a herbalist and a forester set to plant only as this is also considered pretty optimal.

You will also need a herbalist pretty soon after you have most of those buildings up. Place a herbalists hut in a close by forest and they will soon have a little stockpile of herbs. People take the herbs to the herbalist to treat minor ailments. They're like a local doctor.

When you get onto farms things start being more predictable with regards to food. Basic guidelines are that a farmer can tend to an 8*8 square, although it's an area of constant debate. I have ran farms with 2 people at a 15*15 size, you just get a reduced yield/harvest. Remember to get your farmers back farming in early spring if you put them onto other professions during winter. If you leave them as farmers they will generally be labourers during winter although all professions seem to work less during winter anyway.

Herdsman sometimes cannot seem to keep animals alive even with sufficient numbers of herdsman...They just die. I have only seen this happen with cattle. I go for sheep first as they give food and wool which when made into warm coats with the leather from the hunters lodge has a very high trade value of 15, the highest in the game. You get animals through trade posts.

With trade posts you only need someone working there when you want to change the inventory of the trade post. You can trade and receive traders with no one being a trader in your entire mini empire. I'd say never trade away anything that is not easily gained. So by all means trade firewood and clothing when you have enough for roughly 1.5 seasons. Never trade iron or stone as it takes a long time to mine/quarry and you're going to need all the stuff you find on the floor and collect.

If you have herdsmen I would have an empty pasture not being worked on standby in case you get an infestation.

Build a well if you're not building very close to a river. Fires spread in closely built towns.

I can't be bothered to put it all down so I'll summarise

1st Year:

•Houses for everyone

•Hunter's Lodge and Herbalist (3 and 1 people respectively)

•Woodchopper (1)

•Storage Barn (1)

•As many stockpiles as you need.

•You should always have at least 2 laborers and the others can swap between builders and labourers.

2nd year:

•Tailor

•Blacksmith (What is important to note is that these two jobs do not always need to be occupied)

•Gatherer's Hut

•Forester's Lodge

•Possibly a Fishing Lodge but probably begin upgrading your houses to stone.

•If you have the resources a Well

•By this point your food buildings do not need to be fully worked, otherwise you'll aquire too much food and run out of space in the storage barn.

3rd Year:

•Build more houses to promote growth

•Start building roads, just dirt ones

•Let population grow to about 50

•School

•Cemetary

•If you begin to run out of food build another set of hunter's and gatherer's in a different forest, also build houses and storage barn near them.

I need to think about what you do afterwards, I haven't played in a while, at some point get a mine of both types, but farming and trading I never do till past 100 pop.

I build a trading post and put my excess food in there are they can store massive amounts of resources.  I use the excess food to buy seeds or animals.  When things go tits up due to a disaster or something, its surprising how quickly you burn through 10000 food when people start idling as they're not happy.

While I can appreciate the idea behind this, you're very dependant on your starting point being near a lake or major river. Plus with the seeds and animals you need more people to work it.

You're right about the river, I always seem to end up next to one (only played four games though).  Also, I tend to only require seeds or animals from around 25 years onwards.  Before that I just use the seeds I start with and I don't use herdsmen.  Wheat is the best seed to plant as you can make alcohol with it as well as eat it.

A note about health: villagers need a varied diet to stay healthy - they can't just live off your two seed crops and a bit of meat. Having gatherers going is great to get variety into their diets. Mushrooms!

Obvi had the idea for a list of answers to FAQs or problems people have come across where they found the answer.  I'll update the OP with them.

Refilling Health and Mana quickly at the fountain
As soon as you enter the fountain area to replenish your health and mana, move all items which increase your health or mana (including strength and intelligence stat increase items) in your inventory to your stash.  This puts your mana and health down to its much lower base levels.  Then when you're fully replenished just add the items back into your inventory from your stash and see your mana/health capacity and levels jump up saving you valuable time.  When you add items which increase your health or mana and your health and mana are already full, the increase in health and mana is always automatically filled up to its new higher capacity.

Arcane Boot/Soul Ring extra mana trick
This works using the same principle as the "Refilling Health and Mana quickly at the fountain" trick mentioned above and tread switching.  Just drop your intelligence stat increase items or items which increase your mana capacity before using the boots or ring and then pick them up afterwards to increase the effectiveness of your boots/ring.  It can make the difference between being able to use one ability or a combo so it's worth doing.  Note, don't try this if there are enemy close by or invis heros on the enemy team.  They could snipe your items.

Empty bottle/ally teleporting from fountain trick
If an ally has teleported to you from the fountain they are still affected by the regeneration bonus for several seconds.  If you quickly give them an empty bottle it will be refilled instantly.  This video shows this and other useful bottle techniques.

      Drop tranquils whilst jungling
If you bought tranquils, providing there are no invis heros or people missing on the map you can drop your tranquils whilst clear a camp so that when you pick them back up again they instantly start to heal you.

    • By Chris P. Lettuce
Hi, My name is Chris P. Lettuce here and on steam, and I was banned last week from one of the High tower servers that i regularly visit. I was given absolutely no warning, and received no messages after my ban. All I could think of is two guys on the other team wanted to use only snipers, no one was doing it, i was a pyro, and then I was banned. I was wondering If I could please be un-banned?

I reported a player for racism on a server, and uploaded proof. An admin, "blebs", tried to help and ban the player. Unfortunately, the player changed his name to something similar to mine, and I was kicked. After rejoining, I was votebanned by the player I reported. Any help for me on the mods part?
