How does DOTA 2 compare to LoL?

Recommended Posts

I never have been a very competitive MOBA player. I only have a few multiplayer matches under my belt and mostly play against bots. I still have a blast doing though. I also played Infinite Crisis and Heroes of the Storm for awhile. All very cool but League just has me hooked.

What does DOTA 2 have that is better then LoL?

I see there are DLC packs...what are these for?

Just play both a reasonable amount and then find out what you like more, there isnt really a "better" about either game, it's all down to personal preference. Although i am interested in what you mean by DLC packs?

Extra downloadable content that you pay for. Looks like there was 3 content packs available.

.

I just looked into it more. Just looks to be cosmetic upgrades to gear for some characters.

There is a DLC kind of for dota and I believe it's a beta of source 2. I only found this out yesterday though. It's been apparently available since August at least. I haven't downloaded it but it's the beta of the coming update which will allow the community to make updates for dota in the future, rather than volvo having to do it.

Panda's right though. Try both and see which you prefer.

Maybe I should rephrase the question...why do you guys prefer DOTA 2? Because obviously no one plays LoL.

A few people do play LoL here, and i, for example, did play both. :-P

I prefer Dota because i like the game mode better, and there is a lot of small things that just add up. It ended up being a matter of preference for me.

(disclaimer: i only played LoL for like 15h or so, before i switched over to Dota, with 1800h+ now)

As said before, this choice mostly comes down to personal preference. I choose DotA because I liked the art style of the game better, and everything that you can buy in the game is purely cosmetic, and doesn't influence the game at all. Besides that, dota works with steam, which makes everything so easy :)

Dota Is the first game if it's type I played. I like the fast pace, the wide variety of heros and items which gives a lot of flexibility. Every game you play, effectively everyone starts off and can be whichever hero they want to be too. It looks good too.

I've never played LoL, but my brother does so I can tell you a couple of the differences.

Mainly, LoL is often seen as more 'casual' than DOTA. LoL is often seen as the easier of the two (I can tell you DOTA isn't an easy game to learn) and therefore the nicer one to just pick up, play and get into. DOTA is just as fun and addictive, but the learning curve seems steeper especially if you haven't played a MOBA before.

DOTA's free to play model is however a lot nicer. The only thing to buy in DOTA are items to customize how your hero looks and they have no effect on gameplay. You can also play all of the 100+ heroes right away, whereas in LoL you have to grind for them or pay for them.

DOTA's graphics are better than LoLs. They had an update recently to improve LoL's graphics but DOTA honestly looks gorgeous.

There are obviously loads of gameplay differences too, but like everyone said you should probably just try both to see which you like best. I personally recommend DOTA, because after 1700 hours I'm still not bored :P
