Anyway, to answer your questions. This was written without any reference to past texts, just remembered from the depths of my mind. A collective noun is the term used for a group of nouns, I.e Army for soldiers, Flock for birds etcetc. There is no plural of the word teeth. It is the collective term, and if being referred to as singular, the word would be 'Tooth'. A semicolon in speech is used as a pause shorter than a full stop/Colon and longer than a comma. You could say it is one-and-a-half commas. For example: He was being eaten slowly; he was being eaten by the monster. In writing, it is to denote continuity between several list items, being less disruptive than a Full Colon. For example: Here is a list of what I did today; ate breakfast; went to Auburn to breakdance; Hit my head on keyboard... A colon is used in a similar way as the semicolon. In speech it is used to continue a sentance, but has the same pause value of a full stop. In writing it is used as a connector between two similarily structured sentances to show contrast or comparison. On the other hand, it can also be used like a semi-colon when writing lists, except only at the begining. For example: You just read it. Where is the end of our English knowledge? There is no 'end'. people think English is differnet to other pursuits, such as Science or Mathematics, but it's just the same. Journalists will never create 'The Perfect News Report', much in the same way as a Genologist will never create 'The Perfect DNA'. The reason we write these words like this: Etymology. We do this because the people that taught us said it was the right way, and they did it because they were told it was the right way, and so on. In addition, words from other languages sometimes leak into our English vocabulary. Why do we write 'Bonjour' instead of 'Bozhurr'??? Because the teachers retained their original spelling. But don't take the above as truth. If you don't believe me, go search some site references or ask your ENGLISH teacher. Im happy to be disproven on this matter.
