Captain Falcon 0 #1 Posted July 18, 2008 This is my tip thread and feel free to post any tips you might know of. I main soldier so i'll try my best to say what i know. I don't think I'm good, I made this topic to improve and try to help other to. I want to hear any tips you have or if any of my tips seem wrong tell me, I want to get better and I think most of you do to. -As a soldier always jump when firing rockets at close range (i like doing it both at long and close), You take less damage from your rockets when you are in the air. -Most classes can back walk and kill a pyro running at you, This works with spy and medic no prob. -As a soldier on 2fort it is possible to rocket jump on the little metal wall covering a part of the battlements. If enemies run out of that part they can not notice you unless they look upwards. -Don't think the axtinguisher is bad at all, It is amazing. Some people may think that if you keep flaming them you will kill them faster but if they start running switch to your ax for an easy kill -Try rocket shoveling on unaware snipers or others, It feels so satisfying. (just for fun) -Soldier's rocket launcher is positioned to the right of him so when he can fire rockets while he is facing a wall away from damage at a sentry or a group of enemies. It works amazing on sentries with no engies -Sometimes rocketing stickies isn't a good idea. Depending on how your team is positioned it could fly over to a sentry or sniper, It might be better to take out your good old shot gun. -Rocket jumping to places inaccessible by other members of your team usually provides weak snipers or passage ways for spies. Just be careful there aren't any heavies or sentries over there. -Don't spy check with your rocket launcher. I still haven't learnt this. If they are a spy usually you would take damage if they are close providing in a suicide. -ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS RELOAD WHEN YOU AIN'T FIRING. I would think this would be for all classes but i can't stress this enough. Most of the time if uber a soldier they tell me afterwards they didn't have full ammo, I just saw them standing there NOT RELOADING! They would fire 2 and than start reloading, god dammit - Crits don't have damage dropoff so if you see a heavy with crits RUN even if they are at middle range -See any grenades rolling towards you? That probably means they have stickies set up somewhere close by, so watch out. -When at a dispenser healing charge your mini-gun and start firing or blaze up your flamethrower, There is no loss and you might catch a spy or kill someone. Nket 16 #2 Posted July 18, 2008 When playing a pyro hold the W key and the left mouse button until all your enemies die (remember even if you die they will still burn to death!) edit: Dont bother running from pyros because they have faster move speed, also dont bother trying to kill them because they have more health than you, also dont run try to run away with your back turned, it only makes you die faster. Falkin 0 #3 Posted July 19, 2008 -See any grenades rolling towards you? That probably means they have stickies set up somewhere close by' date=' so watch out.- Crits don't have damage dropoff so if you see a heavy with crits RUN even if they are at middle range [right']7808 Sadly youd be suprised how many demos do not in fact prepare beyond chucking grenades. And run period from a heavy crit. The accuracy of the gun may fall off at range but as mentioned the crit does not and will only take two or three hits to cut you down. When playing a pyro hold the W key and the left mouse button until all your enemies die (remember even if you die they will still burn to death!) 7808 Or if you can position it right' date=' run along side them but with the flamer pointed at them so that often theyll be firing where you [i']were all the while being roasted. Demoman (and this is mostly in regards to 2Fort since thats what I play) - Nade spamming the area in front of your base? Having lots of jumpers trying to take the easy way up? Scatter your stickies on the floor near you and on the opposite side. Unless your slow or they fire a crit before you can set the trap off, that tactic will quickly evaporate. Also people hiding in the center partition wont last long if you keep up the fire. Just be prepared if they try to dash out or walk the lip over the front door to fire at your from an unexpected angle. - When setting a trap there are a few places that a solid mass of stickies will help you. Case in point, the sewer landing (not the stairs) near the S tunnel in 2fort. If you put all your stickies in one place and an enemy passes through them by speed or invisibility, blows them apart, or your reaction isnt fast enough, then youve just lost your biggest bang. Spread your trap out enough that its still effective but its placement isnt totally lost by a counter blast. Also retain a handful of stickies around you to counter scouts and spys that might get past (both only require two stickies usually). Like most surpises a mass explosion usually only works well at blind corners or above the point that someone on a lower level can see (ie on top of the battlements). - Lay traps in unexpected places like on ceilings. Often people are looking slightly down when not in combat so they may not see the trap coming. Also dont forget that the grate over the front door accepts fire and explosions in both directions. If you can come in from the back, trash that grate top SG or demo camper from below instead. - There are many odd places on Valve maps that have hidden ledges that you can jump to. This is common knowledge but its not something I recommend in practice. Your a sitting duck that any smart player will catch onto quickly (more so with a post-kill focus display). Your just as likely to fall to a 'clumsy death' as not, having already partly killed yourself getting up there and then being shot at later (as few medics make any attempt to heal people in those positions or even notice them). Learn these places if only to know where your being shot from (or as a medic to heal them). - More is better. When being ubered, and your in the heat of trying to dump a SG nest, drop as much as safe on it. Ive seen untended SG's take upwards of near a full round of stickies without blowing up (where usually theyre down with as low as four, dispensers and teleporters with two). - Use your power build up. Theres no reason to fire your sticky launcher at its default range all the time. It usually only takes one sticky hit on a sniper to make them run for the spawn med and not aim at your head. - Keep moving. Next to a Eng the Demo is the most prone to sitting in one place. You will lose focus while waiting and then your dead (with no SG to take over for you after). - If you have the option to do so, dont let the other team control half the map with a bridge SG setup. Get in the water somehow and pump stickies in the general area inside the bridge. Engs are usually to focused on their setup to notice and people passing over dont either. Even if they do and you eventually die by that time youve put enough up there to trash their advantage. - Your the only person who can cover the intel at both exits. If you have the time, sticky both and place yourself near the battlement entry hallway where you can see. Just be quick because if its a scout he/she can be gone in a blink when your looking at the other exit for too long. - On that note, look to see where your teams SG's are. Dont just run to one exit at random. Unless its a very well organized group coming up theyre not getting past the SG so youve eliminated half of the problem already. - Be a helpful teammate. If your staying in the base plant a few stickies around an Engs setup to asplode that pesky sapping spy before he does too much damage. Even if no ones around to repair at least you got rid of the spy. - When faced with an uber and your in a superior position, try to have some fun. Get lots of boom under them and send them flying. This will often break the uber (thus wasting it for a time or totally), cause confusion, and give you, your team or an SG time to cut down the unprotected half. Be careful since this may very well send the previously ubered in your direction at full+ health. On other things - Like I mentioned in the 'What pisses you off' thread, DO NOT LEAVE THE BASE WHEN THE INTEL HAS JUST BEEN TAKEN. Move inwards to protect (even if your already outside), not outwards to let the taker pass through a hole. - The intel is important but no so much that you the entire team leaves the base. Just last night I took the chance of hitting the other teams base while they were ALL protecting the intel in my teams sewers. Only had to face one SG and its Eng the entire time. Waltzed in and out while the other team was all running around in the water trying to get back or pushing farther in. If your team looks like its in that position, take the initiative to go back to your base and watch the intel since it may very well already have someone down their waiting for yours to return. - If your amongst a number of coordinated Eng's and set up shop together away from your base, try to have one of your teleports go BACK to the base. That way at least you have the option to escape, others can return to do other stuff across the map or block a intel capture, or as the Eng your SG can be across the map while you help your teammates but its only a step away. Doxt 1 #4 Posted July 19, 2008 shoot your grenades at the ground immediately in front of you to roll your shots towards the enemy front lines, if done correctly they will blow up right at their feet instead of way behind them.

It's sooo easy to kill pryos when they just chase after you. Most of the time they will either keep their flamethrower out, or they have their flare gun equipped. Meaning, the only way the pyro can kill you when your running away is if they have a shotgun! So, let this be a lesson to pryos. On most levels keep your shotgun equipped and switch to it often, or the ax.
You suck and have no life 203 #6 Posted July 19, 2008 The problem is newbs are newbs. Thats bottom line. They see a rock and trip over it, but then they trip over the same rock again and again. The internet is a wealth of information, anything posted here will have been mentioned x100 with a simple google search. This post has great intentions, BUT.... If I have yelled in game at countless morons and threaten to kick their ass in real life, they still don't listen, this thread isnt going to do much. Im not asking impossible standards like requiring aimbot like genetics or dexterity, but is it so hard to ask the engineer to not build a sentry right next to another one, have it die 5 seconds after I said "i told you so", and the moron builds one right next to another one 20 seconds later? Alucard winrar 0 #7 Posted July 19, 2008 Medic tips: -Please for the love of god, dont latch onto one heavy and not heal other ppl it pisses of your team, doesnt help anyone but the heavy, charges uber slower, and you dont get as many heal points. -NO ONE WANTS THE KRITZKRIEG! -Unfortunately not everyone seems to know this, right click for uber :-/ -Buff up everyone, helps out a lot and points. -Spies=uber saw targets. -Do run from pyros, besides scouts you are the fastest class so use that speed. -Never uber sodiers unless your taking multiple soldiers, 4 rockets doesnt get you far and with reloading thats all your likely to get. -Uber heavy to kill groups, pyros to fuck up ppl and possibly sentry, and demos to take out sentry nests. -When ubering against a sentry, run out in front of your uberee to take the knock-back effect of the sentry so you two can get in closer. -Prioritize those on fire or in the red for health. Dont be afraid to stop healing someone even if they arent at full health if a more urgent patient comes along. -Scan over your teammates, be aware of where ppl are hurt and where ppl are getting hurt. Those are places you should be helping. -Be a coward, your main job is to uber and you cant charge when your dead and your helping no one while waiting for spawn. Camail 1 #9 Posted July 24, 2008 -See any grenades rolling towards you? That probably means they have stickies set up somewhere close by, so watch out. 7808 Damn it, don't you dare take away my bait and switch trick. NO ONE BELIEVE THIS IDIOT. Tips: Demos- You are an amazing weapon, you provide defense and also destroy it -When you are on defense lay down your stickies ONLY if there is a constant stream of enemies, otherwise your are stagnant ( and no, just pipe bombs while having stickies planted is not a good consistent defense, in 1-3v1 that can help, but only then) -stickies have an inaccurate name, the splash damage is most effective when in the air, this is your mid-range weapon as well as the pipe bomb, you can vary between the two if you ran out of either of them -Sticky rape Now, I am hesitant to tell people of this, because as of now I'm the only demo I know that uses this technique and its modified versions. It involves shooting one sticky, then stalling for a fraction of a second then firing another, this cause the first to land and the second to be in the air while detonation, giving maximum surface area for damage. When perfected this can become very fluid and as quick as 2 consecutive stickies on the ground, but the does great splash damage, or death. Most like you will use this when on a lower level than the enemy, as you can use the peak of the arc of the sticky as a mental marker of when to detonate, along with the fact that detonation is delayed from when you fire. The stickies do not have to be in the same place when fired, in fact you should slight vary the placement to increase the area that is deadly and/or damaged. As a result of this I have stickies as my main offensive and defensive weapon despite its medium range. Now onto a modified version that I use to shutdown the toop left on the first point of goldrush while defending. - Moar sticky rape- This works to kill peole with splash damage as apposed to the small center explosion of the sticky. Now, this is similar to sticky rape because you time your firing of the stickies and is used in a similar way on lower levels of the field. in this way you fire two stickies in succession, but you time it so the priming period ( time when you are not allowed to detonate) is only finished for the first sticky. When you get this perfectly, you fire two, detonate one in the air, then the other in the air, these two stickies are in quick succession and are like regular attacks, but it gives the illusion of much more heavy attacks. This also increase surface damage and because they are both in the air can potentially have a very wide death area. After understanding this you can create a combo,, I prefer 2-3-2-1 with my 8 stickies, with defense you will always be close to ammo, so if you know someone is there, then you are probably slowing killing them. This provides very efficient cover fire that isn't another spamming noob, you can remain vigilant in your other surroundings when the enemies retreats for 10 seconds because they think 3 demoes are camping them. Now the next one I actually learned from a random demo that probably did it on accident, then modified it - Sticky trap When you are in a semi-open area, you have the opportunity to abuse the enemies knowledge of your power (which is DO NOT RUN OVER STICKIES< EVAR!!!!!), so you can lay a series of stickies, trapping them into a confined area they will get confuzed about and run into a sticky or be pipe bombed. Not first you set twos tickies in the way they are moving, if they are stupid the fight is over, but if the chose another place to run you set a 4 sticky line, now some of the peopl you meat will fall for this one. The rest will be pushed backards. Also, try and get them to back up ina corner. you always have a constant ofe one blocked area, this obstacle is a wall. Ins some cases there are 2 walls, so these first lines are all you need. If you only have one wall then the last 2 stickies you have can block your enemy in which case you can kill them with a pipe bomb, shoot more stickies to not only splash damage them from your new stickies, but with the old ones that detonate. Ir you can wait for them to make and error. 3 of the many reasons I'm a godly demo.
Tay 0 #10 Posted July 24, 2008 Damn it, don't you dare take away my bait and switch trick. NO ONE BELIEVE THIS IDIOT. 8055 I love laying a sticky trap (say, the roof of a tunnel, or right around a corner), then running out wielding my bottle. I get an enemy to chase me (often a pyro) thinking I'm easy/out of ammo or something. I run past my trap and they follow... BOOM. So. Much. Fun. I also like tricking people with my sentry spray. Alucard winrar 0 #13 Posted July 25, 2008 Pyro Strategy: -get at minimum 5 buddies to go pyro with you, everyone equip backburner and just randomly wonder around the map and your bound to get kills in the right places. -Use the flare gun on anyone over 3 inches away, its awesomely effective. In fact, find snipers and just start lobbing them at the sniper but dont mind learning to aim that damn gun or anything like that. -Charge heavies from the front, it will surprise them so much that they will stop shooting out of shock and you can easily kill them without harm. Falkin 0 #15 Posted July 25, 2008 I didnt even know this vid was out yet until i found it on youtube. 8149 The author is quite right about the 'blaze' aspect as he calls it. I remember playing the last stage of dustbowl (believe thats what he shows @ 2:25, been a long time since I played that map) and kept an entire team near the first capture point as a pyro because Id jump out into the middle of their setup and set half of them on fire. I died plenty but they wasted about half their time just at that one spot recouping time after time. Someone even mentioned it when the map changed, it was a hoot. coda 1 #16 Posted August 4, 2008 If you see an uber going over a bridge or right next to a ledge use the knockback on the flame thrower to boost the medic off of the bridge. Or if you see an enemy on the control point, boost them off of it. Although this may seem like common sense I never actually see people do this. I did it on dust bowl the other day and got rid of like 5 ubers which allowed our sentries to stay up longer, thus we won the match.
