Deadringer Better Than I Thought

Recommended Posts

I saw a disguised spy coming at me, so I killed him. I verified he was dead on the kill score on the top of the screen. 5 seconds later, I was backstabbed by the same guy. Confused me for a sec since their respawn was 16 seconds. So apparently when you kill someone using the deadringer, it shows up as you really killed him in the score board.

I tried it out. It turns out even better. Not only are you invincible of the first hit, but your HP jumps to 165. This is great for suicide missions where your odds of getting shot at is high.

Was a problem the first death but no longer. Once I see who has it, I just mentally list the player for later and know to be spy-checking 1sec immediately after I kill him.

Even for a suicide run, it's pretty weak.

Now on the other hand..if there's TWO spies with it, I'm fucked. Being double-teamed with both using dead ringer makes me a chicken heavy running for my life.

I also noticed something about it. A spy was dominating me and when I killed the spy, I did not get "revenge" on him. This puzzled me for a second but I'm pretty sure he was using dead ringer. So that is a little indicator that he didn't really die, although not useful in most situations.

The more I use Dead Ringer, the more tricks I find. I don't keep it active, and instead wait until I really need it to use. It's painfully obvious someone's using a Dead Ringer when he falls dead on your spychecking bullet, so I don't activate it until I get hit a few times.

Also, if you're lit on fire and by some stroke of luck escape the pyro's flame stream, you can activate it and let the fire damage trigger it, leaving a flaming corpse and cloaking you, no longer on fire.

Cloak and Dagger, on the other hand, is trash.

The Dead Ringer is almost broken. The only thing that keeps me from dominating their entire team is the f'king pyros. Interestingly, it's fairly easy to dodge pyros with the CandD, as the people currently playing pyro either don't play it much or don't know where a spy can hide (i.e. on top of barrels, tucked away in corners, etc.) Two things I'd like for Valve to fix with the new watches is slightly increased cloak regen on the CandD when you're standing still (or maybe crouch to get the CandD to regen faster) and have the cloak on the Dead Ringer last just a hair longer. Not too much more, I just find that I uncloak in the most ... unsatisfactory places with it, even while sticking to walls.

Oh, BTW, this recruit currently has every unlock plus an additional Huntsman. No idling, no scripts, just skill and luck. Plus a bit of taunting Phantom (who plays a lot more than I do) and Lorax (who seems to care more about the unlocks than I do).

This system is dumb.

It's weird, it's like the system specifically rewards certain people. No idling and I have everything but the Razorback which I don't even care about. If you see me wearing one, it's probably for the achievement which, sadly, I care more about.

If you uncloak immediately after the deadringer activates the cloak, the bar becomes full again right away, allowing you to use the deadringer AGAIN. This basically means you can just keep activating it and its like a mini self uber. Since each time, you deflect a hit.

Pretty fun stuff huh?

Works well if you disguise as a friendly too. They dont expect you to be a spy at all.

I still don't have the stupid huntsman, but at least I have four axtinguishers.

The Dead Ringer now fully drains the cloak meter, even if the Spy leaves cloak early

Cloak and Dagger, on the other hand, is trash.

I think it should charge maybe a little faster when you are idle. If they don't make that so.... refer to quote above.

lol. nevermind then. I swear to god its like evolution. Gamers are like viruses trying to find the most effective means, and valve is like the immune system always nerfing shlt. Best analogy i can think off before heading home from work.

Two things I'd like for Valve to fix with the new watches is ...

I'd like them to fix whatever brain-dead algorithm they use to determine whether an unlock should be awarded. I've put probably 8 hours into TF2 since the spy/sniper update and have gotten the ambassador, the force-a-nature, and natascha (twice). This is completely ridiculous. I am not going to connect to an idle achievement server and mess up my stats (I actually find them interesting, and if they are inaccurate, they are useless) but I am very disgruntled.

I also find it annoying that people who rarely spy are messing around with the new spy stuff, while I, with 160+ hours as spy, can't get any unlocks to save my life ... so lame.

Dead ringer is great if you're a good combat spy. It's a short ranged cloak and provides you with a shield to save your life with should you be about to die. I actually use it as a shield far more often than I use it as a cloak.

I'll cloak once, sneak up to a good hiding location behind the enemy, and then let it recharge and go kill people, then activate it when I'm about to die, go get health and recharge again, then go kill people again. The CnD is a lot better for wide open maps though.

lol, my favorite part is when you would sit on the battlements as a friendly sniper, and when one of them shot you, I'd inch out and headshot him.

Better yet, they couldn't hit you half the time, even though you were just standing there.

Hey, what a coincidence, I have an extra sandman AND an extra ambassador.

Still no other new unlocks though. What a piece of crap system Valve came up with.

Finally got to try out the new stuff now that valve has let us get them via achievements.

My take:

Cloak and Dagger: just plain awesome, I love it. Not so great for offense, but fantastic for defense.

Ambassador: better than I first thought. Great for owning razorback snipers and making getaways once you're discovered.

Jarate: fun to use, funny as well, but overpowered. I predict a nerf soon, so I intend to abuse it while I can.

Razorback: didn't bother trying it

Dead ringer: didn't try it yet either

Huntsman: can someone explain to me what the pros and cons of this are over the regular rifle? I tried it only briefly and there was a lot going on so I don't have a grasp of it.

Most of the time, hitscan beats projectile, but there are a few tricks to it that you can take advantage of. For one, you can shoot the arrow and duck for cover as it's traveling, hitting the target without ever being in danger. For example, once in Badwater on defense, I found myself staring at a regular Sniper waiting for the gates to drop. So I charged my arrow and let it fly a split second before the gates dropped, letting it travel the distance so that it would be as close to the gate as possible before it dropped, allowing me to drop down to where he couldn't see me, yet killing him with the arrow. Also, if you find yourself against a regular Sniper who's doing the shoot and cover technique, you can predict where he's going to be and shoot your arrow there as he steps into the arrow around the corner, while you're already behind cover.

Another thing, since it's a projectile and it travels a distance, there's more lenience than with the regular Rifle. What I mean is, if you miss with your Sniper Rifle, you miss. But if you miss your main target with the Huntsman, there's still a chance someone behind will step into the path of the arrow. Then again, since it's a projectile, you can dodge it if you're in good position to do so.

And of course, it's better at short range since you FOV isn't restricted, and the arrows charge much faster. Though, since it charges faster, the damage cap is lower, around 110, so you won't be able to kill anyone in a single bodyshot.

Overall, the Huntsman better for medium ranges than the regular sniper rifle and if you like to play aggressively. It only has 12 arrows in reserve, so you're going to have to do more moving around and finding ammo.

a good thing to do with the dead-ringer is to disguise as your own team first and run toward the enemy

when you get shot.

the fake body will drop, you change your disguise to the enemy team.

and by the time your cloak runs out, you are behind them.

then you wait for the dead-ringer to recharge so you can escape if needed

Thanks. This is precisely the type of response I was looking for.
