Graphics Card Recommendations

Recommended Posts

Good benchmark list here of price/performance rating

So the best one to buy is a Radeon X800? Seems legit....

$60 is not much at all for a GPU. If you don't want to/can't spend more, it would be very worth your while doing some research like YouSuck suggested, especially on some second-hand sites like ebay. Do it right, and you could get something a lot more powerful that that cute little 6670 (which while good for TF2 and the like, will not give you lasting performance, and those dinky fans are always really whiny).

My 2 cents pence.

Its amazing what a little bit of self research can do. It builds character brah.

I asked if you know of any that would work pretty well I never asked you to actually research for me. But thanks.

GPU's from the latest release series (in this case the GeForce 600 series and the Radeon 7000 series) are always sold at a mark-up when compared to their similar performance siblings from the previous series. Because you're looking for something relatively cheap, I'd recommend looking at something from the GeForce 500 series or Radedon 6000 series, you will be able to get something much better for the same price, and will not really miss out on anything, since the new features released in each series are generally only useful/noticeable for the high-end cards.

Memory is not the only thing in a GPU remember. That card has 2GB of graphics memory, yet so does my £370 GeForce 670! Something with a 1GB frame buffer would more than enough memory (but there are other things to bear in mind).

Its a little bit more than you were intending on spending, but I had a quick zip around ebay, and this really caught my eye

http://www.ebay.com/itm/XFX-AMD-Radeon-HD-6870-HD-687A-ZHFC-1-GB-GDDR5-SDRAM-PCI-Express-x16-/130834789083?pt=PCC_Video_TV_Cards&hash=item1e765c72db

Its new, and up for auction. Its a Radeon 6870 (which is the card I had before my current one), and I can vouch that it is an excellent piece of kit. Normally they would be retailing new for well over $100.

Or:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/XFX-AMD-Radeon-HD-6850-HD-685X-ZDFC-1-GB-GDDR5-SDRAM-PCI-Express-x16-/181062227427?pt=PCC_Video_TV_Cards&hash=item2a282655e3

Slightly less powerful version, currently going for about $50. Bargain.

Or this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Graphics-Card-chip-series-GTX560ti-/251215641716?pt=PCC_Video_TV_Cards&hash=item3a7d9e7c74

Those are all pretty powerful, previous-gen cards for rock-bottom prices. Just a few ideas.

It's a benchmark list of quality divided by price - the best prices for what you pay for. It does not mean it;s the best. This is a list of cheap cards with decent performance.

The card at the top of the list is $15...

Not all GPUs were created equal, do you know what type of slot your unit has, and will it have enough power for it? o.o?

If you mean expansion slot, he's gotta be pretty unlucky for it to not be PCI-Ex16

You may joke, but while I was very excited to get my 670 back in May last year, I did also have a bit of a heartfelt goodbye session with my outgoing 6870 (which I sold cheaply to my housemate, so I still get to see her).

Also Pro what were you doing with my comment?
