Gloves 945 #1 Posted August 7, 2014 (edited) You may have heard that google recently purchased twitch, well like most people expected it would ruin everything. We're only a few days in and they're doing a good job with it. In this new blog post: http://blog.twitch.tv/2014/08/3136/ They're talking about how they're gonna deal with copyrighted music, and basically what this means is that you will be able to hear it on the stream, but if you want to watch the VODs later (video of the full stream or just highlights in general) the video will be muted, and it's not just during the songs duration, it's the whole 30 minute chunk that the song was played in. (if you don't know twitch's VOD system uses 30 minute chunks of video that they buffer, and once that 30 minute chunk is finished the next will be loaded) Might not seem like a big deal to some people but it's pretty huge when it comes to highlights that streamers save, or to the people that like to watch streams after they're finished. Sorry for shitty english and stuff, tired and wrote this in a bit of a hurry, anyways, thoughs on this? EDIT: Forgot to add this; "This includes in-game and ambient music." EDIT2: Currently a bypass, doubt it will last long though. Edited August 7, 2014 by Gloves
fever 9,884 #2 Posted August 7, 2014 It's a tricky one...personally I have bought songs I have seen in YouTube ads...so I think that they might be better off attacking it via tagging the music being played so you can go and buy it if you wish and maybe having some sort of limit on how many people can watch your VODs with music per month unless you pay...otherwise they mute the sound as stated in the article. I can see why they're doing it...I just wish they attacked the "problem" from a different angle...it smacks of "we're doing something about it, look, don't sue us"...like opening a nutshell with a sticky bomb.

Eraa 1,074 #4 Posted August 7, 2014 This is why alot of streamers use OST's (Original Sound tracks) from Games, so when they come to upload a stream on to youtube or something shit like this doesn't happen to them.

fever 9,884 #6 Posted August 7, 2014 I don't see how they can mute your VOD for in game music. They don't do that on YouTube do they? What's next? Muting videos of your friends talking to you because you don't have their written permission?
Eraa 1,074 #7 Posted August 7, 2014 I don't see how they can mute your VOD for in game music. They don't do that on YouTube do they? They do unfortunately, i was once watching someone do a Fallout new vegas lets play, and when it came to doing the DLC, one of the DLC called old world blues, has alot of copyrighted music playing in it, and almost all the uploads got muted because of it, its fucking ridiculous
The Hungry Caterpillar 585 #8 Posted August 7, 2014 Have to realise that Google are a massive company, which means that they are very closely watched by music licensing companies such as PRS and PPL. Violation of any copyright laws can be very expensive for the offender and in a way, Google is protecting the users of twitch.tv (as well as themselves mostly themselves) from prosecution over the rights of the music. If a streamer wants music on their stream, they should either write it themselves, or get a PRS license, just like any other person placing a product with music attached into the public domain. Canti 386 #9 Posted August 7, 2014 The issue isn't that music is causing videos to get muted, it's that the system used to identify music doesn't work properly and flags things that it shouldn't. TB goes into a lot of detail about the change in his video today:
