Probably "no" to the writing question. I very rarely write and never write fiction. I threw this together during my lunch today.

Relation between caster level and summon duration:

1 round per caster level, at least from what i've read.

 

I don't like that rule, though, and usually adjust accordingly to situation, but at least twice that.

 

For example: it's easier to keep a water elemental to help you next to a river or on a lake than in a desert.

Also, it depends on the task you give them. "Lemme conjure a lesser succubus to clean my kitchen." Yeah well, it will work, but the spell duration will be shortened, due to... well, i guess you see my point.

Basically, when they're intelligent enough to communicate and you're able to persuade them to stay longer, they will stay longer. Charisma checks help, too.

Also how do specialist variants work? I was seriously considering rapid summoning and enhanced summoning. Do I take it as a feat?

Caster level -> your level in your summoner class (wizzzard, druid, whatever)

Specialist variants mean you specialise in summoning certain types of beast, which gives you a bonus on... uh... don't know exactly, either on number or moster level, have to read it up.

Rapid and Enhanced Summoning are feats, yes.

Enhanced Summoning is import for every Summoner that is worth his money - gives the monster(s) summoned +4 on str and dex!

Rapid Summoning... tbh, have to read that up, too.

Your caster level is equal to how many levels you have in a spell casting class. So if you were a Wizard3/Fighter1, you'd have a caster level of 3. Wizard4? Caster level 4.

Last question for now: Are they additional feats I take (since they have downsides by definition) or are they replacing current feats?

To clarify, I'll lose summon familiar and scribe scroll, so is it replacing them or them AND my toughness/improved init.?
