but I have to point this out, using that word or any word used to describe a group of people (including "fag" and "gay") in an offensive context, is offensive to the entire group of people.

Just like if I say, "you're as stupid as a TF2 player"...I'm not just insulting the person I'm speaking to, I'm also insulting all TF2 players, using any group name as an insult is proclaiming that being a member of the group is somehow bad. It declares yourself to be prejudiced against that group.

I find that to be offensive, even though I'm neither African American, nor gay (and I pick those two, because they're the slurs I hear most often on here). I find the use of that language in those terms to be offensive to me personally as a human who wants to put stupid ignorance and hate behind us all...as well as a white man who doesn't want to have to be ashamed of the color of his skin.

Yeah, being on someone's most killed/killed by list isn't much of a big deal, seems like it's mostly a function of playing together a lot, and one person getting a lot of kills on the other without them reciprocating could happen for a lot of simple reasons (i.e. maybe one person always plays spy, the other plays pyro a lot, or one plays medic, the other plays heavy...how often will the medic get a chance to kill that heavy, unless the heavy's an idiot...). It's a kind of entertaining stat to see, but I don't think it tells you much in terms of relative skill...in fact its probably worse than K:D ratio in that regard.

I do find it a bit useful in terms of seeing who's good at their class...since I fancy that I'm pretty tough to kill as medic, when I see a sniper near the top of my list, I know that they're at least a half decent sniper.

same reason I feel ashamed when I travel abroad and people find out I'm American...I know a couple racist assholes doesn't mean all white people suck, and the things the US government does doesn't make all Americans horrible, but I still start to worry that I'll be judged by what others have done. I appreciate the honest and straightforward reply, and can see your logic...but I guess in my defense as someone who complains about racism...I'm kind of in a unique position..I'm hispanic and white, I don't have an accent in English, although I can speak Spanish conversationally with a decent enough accent that people in Spain can't tell where I'm from...I also don't really identify culturally with most latinos since most of my culture I've gotten from my Spanish (from Spain) mom, and not my Brazillian dad...So I act white, I look white, but I'm also hispanic. I see my mom dealing with stereotype and prejudice issues all the time, because of her accent, and because she's a woman in a man's field. I also recognize sexism on a bit of a personal level, as I'm a male who wants to work with children...which makes me all sorts of paranoid, because there is this sort of implicit assumption that people have that there must be something wrong with sensitive nurturing guys who want to work with children (for example, I worked at a preschool in college and had to ask the female employees to take care of kids who had peed or pooped their pants...on the one hand I was grateful that I didn't have to deal with the mess, but on the other hand I was offended that people believed that when it came down to it, men can't be trusted around children). Those experiences make me feel a strong sense of empathy with people who are receiving more overt and hostile forms of discrimination. At the same time, I'm a white male, and so when those racial lines get drawn by people using racist language, I find myself standing on the wrong side of them, and then I feel a sort of shame by association...does that make sense?

But I'm even conflicted a bit about that...because I also think people should say what they mean, and I think political correctness has done a disservice to the movement of racial equality because it just buries the issue, making people into closet racists, rather than open racists, which makes those beliefs harder to combat.

So I guess what I'm saying is, say what you need to say, but if I find it offensive, I'm going to say something to at least make sure that you understand why it would be offensive, and why you're not just offending one person when you use a derogatory term, or one group, you're hurting us all. I think this should be obvious with the "N" word, but I've found people to be genuinely surprised when I suggested that calling someone a fag as a joke would be offensive to gay people....and I think maybe people forget about that last bit, about it hurting everyone. No one is always going to be in the in group...do you want to be in a tolerant society when that time comes?

One more important reason that I try to speak out when I see racism/prejudice is the whole idea of fighting injustice when you see it. The consequence of not fighting injustice is tolerance and complicity in that injustice. If I allowed racist language to be used around me without challenging it, I would implicitly be saying that I agree with it.
