h3gi 5 #1 Posted March 9, 2009 http://www.quakecon.org/ Quakecon. At nearly 3000 participants, it's the largest free LAN party hosted annually in the world. Known as the Woodstock of gaming, it's Four Days of Peace, Love, and Rockets. Tournaments are open to anyone interested in this Bring Your Own Computer event where you can win prizes and fame in different games. As usual, it will be held in Dallas, Texas. August 13-16. Why Texas in the middle of summer? Because the surface of the sun was booked. Registration is extremely limited. Within seven minutes of it opening, my spot was a little over 1000. Who's in this? h3gi 5 #6 Posted March 10, 2009 Yeah, I figured. I just wanted to make sure, but in my case, trekking half the state is worth a lan with people I do know.
friedrice 8 #7 Posted March 10, 2009 I've always been interested in going, as I used to compete in Quake a long time ago. But I'm really rusty. TF2 is sooooo much slower compared to Quake, and just throws you off. Actually, every game is so much slower than Quake. At least I'm no longer in the habit of hitting the jet pack button when I was playing Tribes.
h3gi 5 #8 Posted March 10, 2009 You seem to be getting the wrong idea. It's a LAN party for ANYTHING. Quake is just the label name. There are tournaments for TF2, WC3, Smash Bros, Guitar Hero, etc. But really you just come for fun and do what you feel like. Last year the most popular games were DotA and TF2, so there's no reason to feel left out. But yes, TF2 is one of the slowest shooters I've played. You're talking to someone who mained Unreal Tournament 2004 before this.

Miyari 33 #12 Posted March 12, 2009 (edited) I think I'm actually going to go, it's in Dallas this year which is barely 2 hours away. Need to get some of that nerdy shit to cart my PC and display. :| Edited March 12, 2009 by Miyari
h3gi 5 #13 Posted March 12, 2009 Good luck trying to get a spot. I was number 10XX out of 3000 after seven minutes of registration opening. You can't buy/sell spots because they want to keep it truly free. And it's in Dallas every year, hon.

And I'll try, and if not I'll get over it. I'd hate to miss out of being cramped up with hundreds upon thousands of sweaty men and their computers. :|
h3gi 5 #15 Posted March 12, 2009 My "good luck" wasn't quite one filled with skeptical disbelief, you understand. I'd hate to miss out of being cramped up with hundreds upon thousands of sweaty men and their computers. :| That's not something I'd be able to comment on from personal experience, no matter how much I wish it were so. +Henry Spencer 117 #17 Posted March 12, 2009 (edited) I'd never make it. I use an ancient CRT, because back when I played Doom 3 and (especially) Quake 4, the monitor refresh rates were sometimes all the advantage you needed. Especially before the Railgun nerf... Rail with no armor was an instakill, and it made the game extremely difficult if you lost control for a while. So anyways... this thing, a 19" CRT, weighs 53 pounds. That's not an estimate by me, that's what the factory page says. O_o I'm surprised my desk hasn't caved in yet. O_o I'm surprised my desk hasn't caved in yet. It could be worse, you could have one of these. That thing was such a beast rofl I just treated myself to two of these, though I got them retail for much cheaper. 19" LCDs are getting cheaper and cheaper (like $100-ish now?) - its time to drop the CRT!
