Data 2 #1 Posted May 22, 2009 What does it mean when the Lotus servers aren't connected to steam? So far I noticed none of the new weapons work but that doesn't mean we can't get the new achievements and unlocks right?

Game AI Dev (Dave) 17 #3 Posted May 22, 2009 Last night was odd on a lot of fronts. First, my friends list said I was offline although I was logged in to Steam. I had to exit and restart Steam. I go into Dustbowl and the new stuff seems to be showing up. To get rid of the annoying shadows, I turned down the shadow detail level to low, at which point I locked up. Had to blow up the game. This time, when I went to start TF2, it started downloading the patch... which I thought I already had. Then, when I was in, it locked up again for some reason. The third time I was in, my frame rate was about half of what it usually is (and people said I looked like I was lagging despite a ping in the 30s). Very peculiar. Steam stuff will settle out a little once the initial rush of patch-lovers and $9.99 newbies is past. I just hope that the tech glitches get addressed quickly. As for Gabe not releasing a patch correctly. Keep in mind that most other game companies don't even operate in this fashion. Steam is really one of the first portals (so to speak) to allow for this live patching of non-MMO games. It's a real bitch to cover everything given the massive variety of combinations of hardware, drivers, OS software, etc. You can only have so many test machines. That's one of the benefits of writing for consoles is that you know what you are working with and can optimize and test accordingly. Still, I agree that some things could have been caught... like the duplicate items that people were getting. *shrug* That's just something that should have jumped out on any QA tests.
