My char's backstory: Lia

Lia was born in spring and was raised by loving and doting parents. She took after her mother in terms of looks and druidic ability, and her father in terms of her ideals and learning ability. Raised deep within forests, Lia remained wilfully ignorant of the business and noise that went on outside her people’s borders, believing them to be the elders concerns. Instead, she devoted herself to learning everything there was to know about nature, and to better understand it.

Her thirst for knowledge often took her own mini journeys, from roaring falls to the roots of mountains. As she got older, stronger, and (questionably) wiser, she took more risks. Unfortunately, this led to a reputation among her peers as somewhat daring. Stupidly so, sometimes. Having gone on these journeys many times over the decades, there weren’t many opportunities to socialise, even with her own people. Over time, it became clear that she preferred her own company and the company of nature over other elves. Now at the age of 213, becoming lost in her own thoughts and enforcing her own reclusiveness was a passive habit of hers.

This passive habit wasn’t eternally applied however. Thanks to her parents’ tutelage (mainly her father’s), Lia held a deep seated ideal that all creatures and people should be able to make their own choices and explore the boundaries of their abilities without hindrance. So important is this ideal to Lia, is that she will often speak up when it is threatened (in her or others, it doesn’t matter to her), and raise its weapons in her ideals defence.

But despite her zeal, she was still bound by duty. Her parents were the guardians of an ancient druidic relic, and as their daughter, she would one day inherit their duties. So, after much deliberation, Lia decided to go on a pilgrimage – her own personal quest for knowledge and learning. And after a while travelling on her own, she came across other adventurers she had heard about….

Just an FYI update...

We met in the city and having seen another bunch of adventurers we met with our contact.  He gave us a brief welcome and then went on to tell us that our first job was to locate a lost child.  We went to Bogdon Farm (north of the city we started in) to investigate the disappearance at the home of the child, we investigated the farm and then chatted to the parents and tried to establish what had happened.

Lia requested a toy from the parents so we could maybe re-asssure the child if we find him and we headed to some local ruins which the parents had told the child to stay away from, which seemed like a likely first place to investigate.  On the way there we bumped into a dragon in an open area.

I kind of tried to rush it which was my bad....then it jumped over me and slammed Annûn and Greycastle seriously injuring Annûn.  I tried to re-engage him but he dodged my attack and took a significant bite out of me causing me to disengage and use a healing potion.  Annûn was in a bit of a life or death at that time.

Lia distracted the dragon by transforming into an eagle and swiping at his eyes causing him to lose an eye, whilst Kriv healed Annûn and then we ran/evaded the dragon and escaped into the nearby ruins behind the dragon.

Once inside the ruins Annûn discovered that there was a nearby encampment (I forget of what creature) to the north so we sneaked away to the east and set up a camp with some early warning traps whilst we heal and rest up.  Annûn thanked Kriv and reimbursed him with a healing potion.

I'll just ask this here I guess: What are the restrictions on my "Find Steed" spell, like what can I summon as my mount, how rare they can be etc.?

It's a spirit from the plane of your choice that inhabits the animal. You must be able to ride the animal, and it's CR cannot be greater than 1 or so. If you have a special request I'll hear it.

I learnt a lot today, thanks for your patience :)

Dude, the "dragon" was actually a Bulette. http://www.aidedd.org/dnd/monstres.php?vo=bulette

For a mount I was thinking a large wolf, I could create a character sheet for it to keep track of what it can do, and it would look something like this:

and maybe some cool designs on his fur because it's a spirit (kind of getting anime-ish here humor me)

Thanks. When we were doing this part I got distracted at the description part for a few seconds and thought

I heard it being described as something or nothing, which is why I went steaming in. Like I said, always learning. Pretty important to know exactly what your fighting...I initially thought it was a fairly puny worm like creature. I'll make sure I know exactly next time.

Holy crap...that's a big worm.

No insult intended, just want to know, is this your first campaign?

As a monk (you are a monk right lol) you let the tanks (Skaila and I) piss off all the enemies, then run in and do your thing. Something that's worked out well for another campaign I participate in is establishing a marching order so the squishies don't draw aggro (aggro is actually determined by the DM, but the general rule imo is if you annoy something it'll attack you)

As I've said numerous times, I've never played DnD before ever or used roll20. I use to GM for a group but that was 30 years ago. That was my one and only time I RP'ed. We worked through the most of the Dragon Warriors campaigns, a set of 5 or 6 books popular in the UK at the time before moving onto Warhammer. I had a rush of blood to the head because I misheard the creature description...my bad.

I figured we were fighting it as Nano went in so with my dodging and evasion I figured I could be a distraction, as well as engaging when I saw an opportunity. I should pay more attention to the creature description but I was distracted at that time then thought it was less of a creature than it actually was. It's fine, we don't need to start drawing up rules of engagement...that sounds restrictive.

By all means if you fighters have a plan at the start of the fight I'm all ears. I fully expect I'll need some coaching along the way. It's been a while and I haven't played a monk before...I've no experience of any of the creatures...I was going to look them up in the monster guide but it felt a bit like cheating so I'm going off of what DB tells us when we meet things.

Use the Mastiff mount for stats and make it look however you want. Keep in mind that this is a "free" companion basically, so don't get carried away.

You did great. There's a tendency to forget what the characters  should know (and more importantly, what they should not know) and make decisions based upon that. It's not necessary to know all about the creatures I throw your way as they appear, but one thing I noticed when the bulette showed up was how little questions there were. Always ask questions! I won't automatically give out important details so ask and make skill rolls as often as you can.

As far as combat goes: whatever works! The encounter with the bulette was a test to see how you all would react against it. Ask questions, experiment, and work together.

Sigh

"I will jump onto it's back and do a double attack"

*envisions riding the creature like a bucking bronco and weakening it*

*attempts to jump on, fails miserably, gets bitten almost in two*

The only double anything about it was me almost managing to now come in two separate pieces.

I will ask more questions. Yesterday I was wary of asking too many and not letting others get a word in.

I was thinking of continuing to note stuff down then summarise it afterwards as I did for our last session, to keep like a diary of our travels. ..just as a catch up for everyone and for shits and giggles...if everyone's OK with that. Is there a name to our campaign by the way DB?

Was it when the Bulette turned up that I shouted "Hail friend!" and it danced at me?

* carefully goes towards the enemy

* another person has to stand EXACTLY the in the same place

* gets smashed to gruel due to failing all the important rolls

That was about the worst start of a D&D campaign i've ever had, to be honest... xD

Except for that one where the GM told us after 5 minutes that we just killed the important quest character who was about to recruit us, over a stupid mistake. Which totally didn't have anything to do with our thief trying to steal the clothes off this guy. >.>

Well. I got my backup char ready, just in case.

Db's right, you did good for your first game. I mean, I've been playing for 2 years, and I still make mistakes and I'm still learning about the classes. =]

I gotta say, it's more exciting than my other group - seriously, those guys take entire weeks to plan how to creep into a castle... -_-

Say DB, would draw our chars, like you did my rogue? That would be cool :3

I could be persuaded, but I would need a very detailed description of each character I'd be drawing.
