Anyone play D&D?

Recommended Posts

I will be creating the character known as the dwarf, a dwarf monk to be precise. I really haven't done this in a very long time and it shows but I've come up with a good start on an interesting back story. He's a bit of a performer, at times...whilst he has some exceptional talent...it comes with a somewhat expected but quite acute flaw, which is known to him but will need evolving with the help of DB. Ying and yang I guess...he sounds fun to play already so I'm looking forward to this.

I was GM when I last played so I'll be on the other side of the table as it were this time so might need some help...All welcome!

I haven't received a PM yet from you Nano?

Druid, Dragonborn Warlock, and a Dwarven Monk. These are surprisingly great choices. I already have the beginnings of your campaign quest in mind as well as why you would have formed a party.

Obvi, as much as I hate limiting people on their choices of race, I'd like to keep everyone people sized for the most part. Starting at a higher level should give you some great options if you're looking for something exotic as the level adjustment shouldn't be that big of a deal.

Since I'm creating my own setting you'll need to forget about what you know as far as race relations. Keep your characters at size small to large so they can enter buildings and interact easier with medium sized races. Keep in mind that YOU GUYS ARE THE ONLY HEROES THAT PEOPLE KNOW OF! You will all start out knowing each other by reputation at least.

If you could look at this class https://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Blade_Mage_(5e_Class)and approve/ban it that would be great (can rework as needed because it is homebrew after all) I'm thinking half-elf

If not I'll play the cleric

Why don't you take a look at the Eldritch Knight class? It has many of the same themes without the OP anime nonsense.

Here's where I'm at so far. Kriv exile of clan Noxtia, a mostly-silent dragonman Warlock who willingly guards his fellow adventurer with his life as service to the dragon deity chronepsis who bestowed upon me my Eldrich powers. 300 lbs (136kg) 6.5 ft (1.9m) with pitch black scales I breathe acid and harness destructive energies to wither my foes from a distance. The gods help any who get closer or attack my charge.

I imagine the character as a cross between kihmari from ffx and the draconians from the dragonlance universe.

I'm interested in what other ppl are thinking too :)

I'm pretty interested in playing a fighter or paladin, I've only ever played backline chars :) I'll look into it a little more
I'm leaning towards paladin as of right now, most likely a variant human with the oath of vengeance build

 Yes, play a Paladin!

Looks more exciting than a fighter anyway, and with the vengeance build I can slip by with a chaotic good alignment :) (I've never been a fan of lawful good, neutral good is ok but still some restrictions)

And you'll have a built in nemesis!

Listen everyone! I want to get us together in the next few days to discuss characters and world development. It'll be a good opportunity to talk about rules, character interaction and backstory, and what it is that will make this experience the best it can be.

I have a few questions that i hope aren't too dumb, (haha! who am I kidding? XD)

What level are we starting at?
Do we have a healer?
If I'm starting as a druid of the moon and i can transform, which animal would be best to start with and am I restricted? (the book is confusing me on this point).

Personally I'd like to start at level 5 so we don't have to spend too much time grinding and just get to the good stuff. As for a healer I can cover it with my paladin spells but I'm also the tank so that might not be the best choice :P

Everyone will be starting at level 5 or the equivalent if you're using a race that has a level adjustment.

So far, the Paladin seems to be the only healer. You don't HAVE to have a dedicated healer, it's just a bonus.

Widow, there's a chart under the description of Wildshape that explains it, but I'm happy to announce that I think that chart is bullshit. It says that at fourth level you can change into any animal that has a challenge rating (CR) of 1/2 and doesn't fly. I say that you can be a bird if you want to, just remember that you'll have the hit points of a bird. You might find this to be helpful:  http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/SRD:Animal

I was going to catch up with you again last night DB to continue discussion of my hero. I was knackered though so had an early night for once, sorry about that. It's a bank holiday here so I'm available all day though.

DB, i was joking about the giant thief. I only ever played him in a "wtf is this crap" kind of campaign, more based on roleplay than actual stats. ;)

I'll look into the rulebook and think of something.

Probably race confused dwarf/elf halfling. Hates both races. Doesn't know what to do. Tries to shoot axes with his longbow. That kind of stuff. ;)

Some race changes:

There are three types of Elves: Drow (which differ greatly from the usual way they're presented, and have more historical significance than anything else because no one has seen one in a thousand years)

Yeste' ( these are the OG elves that still live in the woods. they don't trade or generally talk to outsiders and are virtually impossible to find - if they don't want you to find them.)

Amada ( these are the elves that people know about and see. During and especially after "The Great War" the bonds of friendship were sealed between these elves and the dwarves, man, and halflings. You can find and visit great elven cities, and half-elves are pretty common. )

There is only one type of Dwarf.   (there are many different clans though, and the differences between them can be night and day)

Tieflings can be devil or of demon origin as per the old versions.

So mountain and hill dwarves get bundled into one? Also db can we talk about a variant human with strength and charisma bonuses?

You could use hill or mountain dwarf to build your character, but any differences would be attributed to your specific clan and not to a different race of dwarf.

There is no need to build a variant human race because of how adaptable humans are. The 5e rules give humans +1 to every attribute which is effectively a +6 with no downside. In previous versions of the game this kind of bonus would give humans a level adjustment of at least +1 but probably closer to +2. So the quick answer is no, humans are already OP as fuck.

Don't plan on being an albino dwarf monk who sleepwalks...I've got that covered

I've always been curious, do DM's look these worlds up or make them themselves?

I imagine it's a lot of fun to make them up yourself and let your imagination run riot. I'm already fitting my back story into the map...the map is perfect for one very specific and crucial part of my back story. I was rescued from certain death by monks and spent a significant part of my life recovering from my ordeal and then living amongst them...which is where my monastic side comes from.

I do both. Sometimes the words I choose will have important meaning and sometimes not. It keeps the variety high and keeps players on their toes about what's important and what's not.

The main continent of Eliond for example is a made up word that I've decided is elvish for "it rises", which is a reference to bread rising and is used to describe how the the continent has large mountain ranges in the middle.
